Information for Students
Updated 4-2-2020
Students are not to be in any building on any Georgia State campus with the exception of those who have received authorization to remain in University Housing. Students who are employed by the university will be contacted by supervisors to determine whether they can fulfill their duties remotely at home.
University Housing is working directly with students who are unable to relocate during this time.
The university is working to help students who have no access to technology or broadband from a remote location. Details forthcoming soon.
We will continue to provide health services for students at the Student Health Clinic on the Atlanta campus. Enrolled students who would like health services should call the Student Health Clinic at 404-413-1930 or visit health.gsu.edu. Counselors are also ready to support students. Enrolled students who would like counseling services should call the Counseling Center at 404-413-1640 or visit counselingcenter.gsu.edu.
Students who are participating in clinical or experiential placements should consult with their placement supervisors and faculty mentors about continued participation.
Graduate research assistants and graduate teaching assistants are permitted to be on campus when required by their university positions. Consult with your faculty supervisor for further guidance. Graduate students who are employed by the university in other positions should remain off campus. They will be contacted by supervisors to determine whether they can fulfill their duties remotely at home. For more guidance specifically issued for graduate students, please visit The Graduate School’s FAQ.
We understand the corona virus pandemic has been very disruptive and has introduced practical and financial challenges to our students. The Financial Hardship and Emergency Assistance Fund helps students overcome unforeseen hardships that hinder their successful academic progress. Though funds are limited, it may provide a resource to help you during this time. Detailed information and an application for this fund are found at https://deanofstudents.gsu.edu/student-assistance/.
Frequently Asked Questions
General Student Questions
Is Georgia State University open?
Yes. While all Georgia State physical campuses are closed to students for the remainder of the spring semester and all on-campus events have been canceled, Georgia State University is open, all classes are being offered online, and the majority of student-support resources remain available to students virtually. On the Atlanta campus, the Student Health Clinic and the Counseling Center remain open, some residential halls continue to accommodate students who are unable to return home, and limited dining services are available to the students who remain in housing.
If I live in a residential hall, do I have to move out?
The University System of Georgia has strongly encouraged all students who can go home to do so. University Housing has directly messaged to students who are able to move out about the specific steps they must take, including signing-up in advance for move-out times and procedures that must be followed to ensure the move-out process is completed smoothly and safely. Georgia State understands that not all of our students have the ability to go home and has set up a process for students living in residence halls to request the ability to stay for part or all of the remainder of Spring semester. Students in residence halls have been contacted directly to request extensions on moving out. If you have questions about these processes, call 404-413-1800 or go to housing@gsu.edu.
Are food services available if I am still living in University Housing?
Yes. University Dining continues to provide food services to enrolled students living in University Housing through its Piedmont Central location. Students may pick up in a to-go box along with a drink and wrapped plasticware. Diners are not permitted to eat or to congregate in the dining hall.
Will students receive refunds for fees and services they will not use?
Yes. For more information go to: https://www.gsu.edu/coronavirus/student-fees/
How did the university decide what fees would be reimbursed to students as a result of campus changes stemming from the coronavirus?
Following University System of Georgia guidelines, fees tied to campus services that have been discontinued for the remainder of the semester were partially refunded at the rate of 40%, commensurate with the period for which those services are no longer being provided. The specific fees refunded are listed here. Fees not refunded, and therefore not listed, are essential for the continued operation of the university and our ability to educate and support students.
My Classes
How will my classes be delivered for the remainder of spring semester?
In accordance with instructions from the University System of Georgia, all Georgia State University classes will be delivered online beginning on Monday, March 30 and extending through the end of the Spring semester.
How do I access my classes online?
The university has created the Keep Learning website to walk you through the steps to prepare for your online classes, with instructions for logging on to iCollege, submitting assignments, taking quizzes, and so forth. On this same website, you can also find ways to access the range of academic supports that you will need, including tutoring, supplemental instruction and advising.
What do I do if I am having trouble accessing a device or the Internet?
Visit the Keep Learning website. Please review our suggestions for Internet access and devices and, if you are still having difficulties, use the form on the site to explain your situation. We will do our best to support you.
What do I do if I am having trouble with my passwords, logging in or have other technical problems?
Our Technology Service Desk remains fully operational and ready to help with technical issues such as log-ons and passcode issues. Please go to help.gsu.edu, call 404-413-HELP (4357), or email help@gsu.edu.
How do I know what readings and assignments I need to complete, when they are due, whether attendance will be taken and other details about the specific courses I am taking?
As has been the case in the past, your individual course instructors will be the source of information about your assignments, readings, tests, deadlines and other course-specific issues.
Can I still access tutoring, supplemental instruction, and other forms of academic support?
Yes. Multiple forms of academic support are fully available and will be offered virtually for the remainder of the semester. Please see the Keep Learning website for a list of these resources and how to access them.
How will my classes be delivered for summer semester?
Georgia State University and the University System of Georgia’s 26 institutions will continue to deliver instruction remotely during May and summer semesters, with only limited exceptions.
USG institutions are tentatively planning to return to normal on-campus operations for the fall semester should guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Georgia Department of Public Health allow it.
In the interim, all institutions have been asked to continue their current telework and flexible work strategies for faculty and staff. USG institutions overall have remained open, with only minimal staff physically on-site to ensure continuity of certain services.
We continue to prioritize the safety of our students, faculty and staff as we do our part to help stem the spread of the coronavirus in Georgia and fulfill our mission to graduate our students in these challenging times.
Health and Wellness
What should I do if I feel sick?
The Student Health Clinic remains open on the Atlanta campus. The common symptoms of COVID-19 are also the symptoms of other respiratory illnesses. Your healthcare provider will determine if treatment is needed. If you develop a fever, cough, or shortness of breath:
- Stay at home. Do not go out and stay away from other people. If you must be around other people, wear a mask.
- Call your healthcare provider or the Student Health Clinic at 404-413-1930. The Student Health Center nurse line is also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-855-750-5056. Your provider will work with the Georgia Department of Public Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine if you need treatment.
Who should I contact if I am feeling stressed or anxious?
Counseling Services remain available to all enrolled Georgia State students, and counselors are ready to support you. Students can seek free and confidential assistance through the Counseling Center by calling 404-413-1640 or visiting https://counselingcenter.gsu.edu/services/counseling-serv
