The Georgia State online Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership program is designed to build healthcare leaders who can successfully lead teams, skillfully negotiate, influence team behaviors and deliver positive results. This program will facilitate the enhancement of communication strategies, managing organizational culture and making effective and strategic decisions. The aim is to provide an opportunity for graduate students and for practicing professionals in healthcare the ability to advance their knowledge and expertise in leadership as they complete their current program of study or while they practice and work.

Program Details

The Graduate Certificate in Health Leadership is open to graduate students with a minimum 3.0 GPA and who wish to earn this credential.

This program expands the educational opportunities for individuals interested in advancing their knowledge and skills needed as a leader in a healthcare organization. The interdisciplinary nature of this program allows students to step outside their traditional focus to understand better the framework and impact of leadership knowledge and skills on communication, organizational effectiveness, and ultimately health care and health outcomes. The content will build upon courses offered in the Lewis College. Students can be enrolled in master’s level programs or not and can be students at Georgia State or not currently Georgia State University students.

For admission, the following minimum admission requirements must be satisfied:

  1. Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  2. Online application for graduate study
  3. Official transcripts from all colleges attended
  4. Two letters of recommendation from individuals knowledgeable of the applicant’s professional and academic abilities
  5. Current resume, including education, work experience and professional development, professional and/or community activities, research and publications
  6. A personal statement identifying your educational/professional goals and the purpose for applying to the specific graduate option

The goal of this certificate is to provide students with knowledge and skills needed as a leader in a healthcare organization.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will identify basic theories, concepts, and models from a range of disciplines that can be used for leadership development and organizational Students will present a case study that applies leadership principles to a case example. The case will be assessed with a rubric that judges students’ understanding of leadership theory and is appropriate for the situation in the case study.
  2. Students learn steps and procedures for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of effective communication, policy review and strategic students will analyze a scenario related to their organization, which requires developing a process map that outlines the implementation of a new product line for their organization.
  3. Students will apply evidence-based principles and scientific knowledge to critical evaluation and decision-making in healthcare Students will complete a literature review that applies to a topic of their choosing of evidenced-based evaluation and decision-making. The review will be assessed with a rubric that judges students’ understanding of evidence-based practice evaluation and is appropriate for the topic reviewed.
  4. Students will assess individual, organizational, and community concerns and resources for healthcare and health outcomes related to healthcare leadership and Students will organize an educational session, which addresses a community need and develop outcomes measures to determine the outcome of the educational session. A rubric to include the resources addressed and the outcomes of the session will be used.
  5. Students will describe and analyze medical-legal issues that affect healthcare organizations and Students will present a case study that concentrates on a difficult situation encountered involving medical-legal issues. The case will be assessed with a rubric that judges students’ understanding of ethics in healthcare.
  6. Students will role model interdisciplinary healthcare values and skills that promote leadership in the health Students, in a group presentation, will address interdisciplinary challenges and rewards in healthcare that applies leadership principles, values and skills. The case will be assessed with a rubric that judges students’ understanding of interdisciplinary and interprofessional healthcare teams.

  • CNHP 7400- Healthcare Culture & Communication  

This course will cover how to build trust and lead collaboration among teams through various communication styles. It will prepare students to provide effective leadership to execute on team goals, create employee development plans, utilize reward and recognition for employee engagement and retention and understand culture dynamics and tactics necessary to shift culture.

  • CNHP 7900- Strategic Leadership in Healthcare Environments

This course will discuss mission and vision statement development, external environmental assessment and determination of opportunities and threats, internal environmental analysis and determination of strengths and weaknesses, critical success factors, strategic objectives, linking strategy and budgets through business planning, establishing the culture for strategic management and strategic control.
