Geosciences, M.S., Geography Concentration

The Master of Science in Geosciences with a Geography concentration allow students to specialize in urban studies, geospatial technologies, or physical geography/environmental studies. Thesis and capstone tracks are available.

The Department of Geosciences is distinctive because it spans the social and physical dimensions of environmental and resource issues, with a special focus on urban communities.

Our faculty have expertise in the social and environmental dimensions of water, environmental geochemistry and global climate change. We are also expanding our Geographic Information Science research and teaching to better represent and describe the complexity of social and environmental concerns.

Joining forces with our students and community partners, we tackle the interrelated environmental and social challenges of the 21st century that involve the quality, quantity and sustainable use of our natural resources.

Our interdisciplinary department is part of a diverse, expanding research university. Georgia State’s location in downtown Atlanta provides access to government agencies at local, state and federal levels, nonprofit organizations, private industry and a wealth of environmental and technical consulting firms.

Program Details

In addition to the general requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Geosciences has the following admission requirements for the Geography Concentration:

  • Applicants to the M.S. degree program in Geosciences with Geography concentration must submit three letters of recommendation from professional sources.
  • A statement of educational/career goals.

Students in the geography concentration can choose from a broad range of courses that prepare them for research or professionals careers. Areas of specialization include urban studies, geospatial technologies, or physical geography/environmental studies.

Students can choose between a thesis research option or capstone project.

The department offers teaching assistantships to qualified applicants. Applicants are encouraged to inquire about research assistantship opportunities with faculty who match their research interests.

Students will have the opportunity to acquire skills in data collection and analysis, data visualization and cartography, allowing them to pursue employment in the public or private sector, or to go on to seek a doctoral degree.
