English majors study language and literature alongside the craft of writing, developing skills considered integral to education in the humanities and prized by employers around the world. We examine language, literature and culture in ways that help communities connect with broader audiences, expand access to knowledge and address pressing social issues.

Undergraduate coursework in English guides students in thinking critically, reading widely and writing imaginatively. Many classes also explore practices that are not, strictly speaking, “writing” at all, such as oral compositions, hypertexts, podcasts and folk art.

At Georgia State, English majors can select from several areas of concentration:

  • Literature,
  • Rhetoric and Composition,
  • Creative Writing,
  • Pre-education and
  • British-American Joint Studies (partnership with Northumbria University)

Majors in each concentration complete their course of study with a focused Senior Seminar that invites students to demonstrate their abilities as writers and thinkers working in a specific discipline.

High School Seniors and Recent Graduates
If you’re a senior in high school or if you graduated from high school within the last two years, you’ll apply to begin your bachelor’s degree program using Georgia State’s Common Application.

International students
International applicants are those students who are in the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa (B-1, H-1, J-1, etc.), students who are living outside the U.S. and who will require an F-1 visa to study in the United States, students who are in the process of applying for Permanent Residency status but have not yet received the Permanent Residency card or students who have been educated outside the U.S.

In addition to the Program Degree Requirements, students must fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences Degree Requirements and the University Degree Requirements.

All English majors takes English 2120 (Introduction to British Literature) and English 2130 (Introduction to American Literature), which introduce methods for studying literary history and practicing textual analysis. Because these courses, along with English 2110 (Introduction to World Literature), are prerequisites for 3000-level course in English, we encourage students to explore them early as they prepare for advanced coursework.

The major requires 30 hours of upper-division coursework in English or Folklore. Students should consult with the Department’s Undergrade Director or their advisor about selecting a concentration as they begin preparing for advanced courses.

Students who complete a bachelor’s degree in English acquire a wide range of skills, including but not limited to:

  • Writing, editing and publishing creative work
  • Using new technology for print, web and social media communication
  • Interpreting data drawn from diverse contexts
  • Engaging imaginatively with multiple points of view
  • Thinking critically about complex ideas and arguments
  • Nurturing the intellectual curiosity necessary for a lifetime of learning
