What does it cost?

All students admitted to the program are typically offered a graduate assistantship, which currently includes a $26,000 yearly stipend and full tuition waiver for five years. Additional funding through fellowships is also available.

How long will it take?

Fifty-seven semester hours of coursework, as a minimum, must be successfully completed for graduation. When feasible, registration in 15 hours per semester is encouraged; at a minimum, students must register for nine hours per semester (excluding summer session).

With internationally renowned faculty and research centers, the Georgia State University doctoral program in economics takes a pioneering approach to economics that emphasizes public policy and empirical evaluation.

In the innovative Ph.D. program, you’ll master advanced econometrics and experimental methods to learn how economics and policy work together in preparation for a successful career as a researcher, university instructor or both.

Combining the latest economic theory, analytical skills, research methodology and empirical techniques, the rigorous curriculum will equip you to meet today’s complex challenges and educate the next generation of public economics experts.

We offer five fields of specialization within economics: experimental, health, labor, public, and urban/environmental. Students choose one primary and one secondary field, and many students choose research that spans more than one field.

Our program has been given a STEM designation, which recognizes the rigorous instruction all students receive. It also benefits international students who can, upon graduation, apply for a STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT) visa extension that allows them to work in the United States for up to 29 months rather than one year (starting with students entering in Fall 2020).

Program Details

A completed application includes the following materials submitted online. Do not submit paper copies:

  1. Submitted Online Application. Online applications must be submitted by the deadline. Paper applications are not available.
  2. Application Fee: A nonrefundable fee of $50 is required for each application. This fee must be paid online by credit card.
  3. Personal/Goal Statement: Two- to three-page typed statement of interest covering personal and professional goals as they relate to the Ph.D. in economics, including desired area of specialization, research interests and faculty with whom the applicant would like to work. Statement should discuss your reasons for applying to the doctoral program, expectations for completion of the coursework and dissertation, and prospective employment. Include special circumstances, if any, or other information not covered in the application you think would be helpful in evaluating your application.
  4. Resume/Curriculum Vitae: Provide a complete, current resume or curriculum vitae summarizing your academic, research, clinical and/or other relevant experiences.
  5. Official GRE (Graduate Record Examination) Scores: Official scores must be reported to institution code 5251 and received by Georgia State by the application deadline. More information can be found at our Admissions FAQ page or, to schedule the test, at www.gre.org.
  6. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems) Academic scores (International applicants only): International applicants are required to submit official TOEFL or IELTS academic scores.
  7. Three Letters of Recommendation: Letters should be submitted through the online application.
  8. Upload Transcripts from each Post-secondary College/University Attended:
    • Upload each transcript to the Academic History section of the online application before submitting your application or upload to your application status page under the Upload Materials section if your application has been submitted.
    • Review requirements for submitting transcripts here.
    • Failure to follow these requirements will delay your application processing.

The Ph.D. in Economics program seeks to develop in the student a high level of competence in conducting basic and applied research and prepare the student for a career requiring a doctorate in economics. To accomplish these objectives, the program provides a rigorous and in-depth course of study emphasizing the latest theoretical knowledge, quantitative techniques, research methodology and empirical evidence in the student’s field of specialization.
