The Deaf Studies minor will provide students interested in working with deaf/hard of hearing children or adults with an understanding of American Sign Language and Deaf Culture(s).

The Deaf Studies minor gives students majoring in other disciplines the language and cultural background to broaden and enhance career opportunities. There are over 11 million people in the United States and over 70 million people worldwide that have some type of hearing loss. The Deaf Studies minor focuses on developing American Sign Language (ASL) skills and offer students the opportunity to take electives in Deaf Culture, history and other areas to broaden their knowledge and cultural awareness.

Program Details

Students are required to meet all university and college admission requirements. If you are not currently enrolled at Georgia State, use the HOW TO APPLY link below. Current Georgia State students can declare the minor with their advisor. In addition, students must:

  • Complete Areas A-E
  • Complete ENGL 1101 and ENGL 1102 each with a grade of “C” or better
  • Complete ASL 1001 with a grade of “C” or better and ASL 1002, ASL 2001 with a grade of “B” or better

The Deaf Studies minor curriculum provides students with an understanding of American Sign Language and Deaf Culture(s). Students will be required to complete 12 credit hours of required courses plus 6 credit hours of electives.
