Chemistry, M.S.

The Georgia State University Department of Chemistry has research programs in each of the five traditional areas of chemistry, with a bioinformatics option available in each:

  • Analytical
  • Biochemistry
  • Biophysical
  • Chemical Education
  • Organic/Medicinal

Our students have the opportunity to conduct research at the interface of chemistry and biology under the guidance of our dynamic research faculty, many of whom are distinguished and noted scholars. The department’s goal is to deliver high quality instructional programs at the graduate level to prepare students for productive careers in academia, industry and government.

Program Highlights

Faculty are leading experts in their own field, serving on panels and study sections at agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation.

We offer outstanding facilities to support research efforts.

More than 150 graduate students are enrolled as of fall 2019 with nearly 60 pursuing the master’s degree

The Department of Chemistry offers graduate assistantships which include an annual stipend and waived tuition.

Regents’ Professor Binghe Wang is one of the dynamic faculty members conducting cutting-edge research at the interface of chemistry and biology.

The thesis program requires the completion of the core area, elective courses and thesis research.

The non-thesis program requires the completion of the core and elective courses and a non-thesis paper.

Both programs require students to complete non-course requirements that cover teaching and lab safety procedures, and a foreign language or research skill.

Information about graduate tuition and fees are available at the following link: https://sfs.gsu.edu/resources/tuition/tuition-breakdown/.

Graduate students in the Department of Chemistry who receive a teaching or research assistantships typically receive a tuition waiver and a stipend, meaning students on assistantships can complete this program without taking on a significant financial burden.

There are also other opportunities for assistantships on campus. See the following link for more information: https://graduate.gsu.edu/funding/graduate-assistantships/.

The emphasis of the master’s program is the training of scientists. The M.S. program will produce well-trained professionals who possess a high level of proficiency in modern chemical techniques and knowledge of modern chemical problems.
