The Literacy Education M.Ed. online program at Georgia State University is designed to prepare certified teachers and education professionals to serve as leaders in literacy education. Tailored for the working professional, this program is offered completely online. The goal of the program is to equip educators with the knowledge and tools to advance the literacy abilities of culturally, racially and linguistically diverse P-12 students in urban and multicultural learning environments.
This online M.Ed. program requires completing 36 semester hours of coursework and an electronic portfolio. Through coursework, M.Ed. students will learn the theoretical, historical and social foundations of literacy. They will also develop and implement literacy curricula, assessments and instructional strategies.

Mathematics educators are responsible for teaching learners the intellectual skills and knowledge across a comprehensive and coherent set of mathematics principles and standards for grades 6-12. Our urban communities need highly skilled mathematics teachers whose content knowledge and instructional practice honor students’ diversity and promote equity. Mathematics educators create learning environments that enable students to learn mathematics by thinking critically, engaging them in mathematical practices and using critical thinking to make sense of core mathematical ideas. Such learning environments, grounded with research-based teaching strategies, embrace Georgia Standards of Excellence in Mathematics for depth and understanding.
The Georgia State University secondary mathematics degree program is grounded in educational theory, research and best practice, integrating principles of social justice and equity. Throughout the program, students take specialized education and content courses and gain practical teaching experience in grades 6-12. Our dynamic program features technology integration and offers study-abroad opportunities. The secondary Mathematics degree program is for students who hold a bachelor's degree and seek an initial teaching certification in Secondary Mathematics, grades 6-12. This program leads to a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) and a clear and renewable (T5) Induction Certificate in Georgia.

The program’s chief goal is to strengthen secondary students’ mathematical understandings. This is achieved by providing you with opportunities to deepen your knowledge of learners from diverse backgrounds and explore equity issues in mathematics classrooms within urban environments.
The program will prepare you to conduct action research in the context of your classrooms, inform instruction and share the knowledge gained in a professional community of teachers.
In general, the Program of Study is framed by the principles and standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the core propositions of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
The M.Ed. major in Mathematics Education at Georgia State University is offered entirely online program and designed to be completed in four semesters.
The Master of Science degree program in Mathematics provides education at the graduate level in algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, bioinformatics, and statistics. Students completing an M.S. degree in mathematics are prepared for positions in industry, government, business, college teaching, and for more advanced study in mathematics or statistics.
The M.S. degree in Mathematics is offered with no concentration, or with one of the following concentrations: applied mathematics, discrete mathematics, scientific computing, bioinformatics, and statistics. These concentrations are designed for students who wish to combine their study of mathematics with selected areas in natural and computational sciences.

The Biological Sciences, M.S, Medical Science Concentration is designed to help students be better prepared to apply to medical school and succeed in the tough first year of coursework.
Students who have completed a bachelor's degree often encounter a “gap year” prior to applying to med school. They often need additional coursework and advising to enhance their application and make them more competitive in the selection process. Once they enter medical school, students often struggle with their first year of studies and wish they had taken key pre-med courses. The program consists of 32 credit hours of relevant courses that teach concepts and skills central to the practice of medicine.
The program focuses on:
- Mastery of specific pre-med coursework that simulates first year medical school courses,
- Advisement with the medical school application process, and
- A capstone course that focuses on internships and clinical research.

Middle-level educators in grades 4-8 are responsible for teaching intellectual skills and knowledge while attending to specific adolescent developmental needs in two of the following content areas: English language arts, mathematics, science and/or social studies. Our urban communities need highly skilled, compassionate and advocacy-oriented Middle Level teachers whose content knowledge and instructional practice honor students’ diversity and promote equity. Middle Level teachers create learning environments that develop learners’ opportunities across several content areas:
- In Georgia State University English Language Arts, teachers teach reading literature, writing for multiple audiences, expressing ideas and opinions in speech and interpersonal communication and exploring the potential of the arts in language arts.
- In Mathematics, teachers enable students to learn mathematics by engaging them in mathematical practices and using critical thinking to make sense of core mathematical ideas.
- In Science, teachers enable students to learn science by thinking critically, engaging them in scientific practices and using core science ideas to make sense of phenomena from the natural world.
- In Social Studies, teachers develop young citizens who can participate in our democracy and the global community by thinking critically in history, geography, political science and economics content areas.

Music Education Concentration, Master of Music (M.Mu.

The online Master of Music in Music Education at Georgia State’s College of the Arts is designed for music teachers aiming to advance their knowledge and skills in music education. This fully online program blends advanced studies in music with pedagogical techniques tailored for both current and aspiring music educators. This program focuses on enhancing teaching effectiveness in school music programs. It covers:
- Pedagogical strategies in music education.
- Curriculum development for diverse educational settings.
- Incorporation of technology in music education.
- Research in music education to inform teaching practices.
The Master of Music program in Music Education prepares you to:

Our stand-alone M.S. Neuroscience degree is offered to students who are seeking graduate training without necessarily planning to pursue a doctoral degree. Students receive training via academic coursework, research, teaching and outreach activities. Our program emphasizes the research aspect of graduate training and so all MS students must either complete a capstone project or successfully conduct and defend an approved thesis. The thesis option is only recommended for students that are interested in eventually pursuing a doctoral degree.
Graduate students in the Neuroscience Institute receive interdisciplinary training by working with Core Neuroscience Faculty and more than 50 Associate Faculty from other departments, including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Education, Mathematics, Public Health, Psychology, Philosophy and Physics. Students can obtain training in a wide range of research methodologies, and have the opportunity to teach and attend journal clubs, seminars and distinguished speaker series.

Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions
The Georgia State online master of science in nursing (M.S.) provides a path to becoming an advanced practice nurse and prepares you for specialized care settings and leadership roles. If you seek to advance, this program will prepare you to implement and evaluate innovative nursing and healthcare information approaches, including interprofessional care coordination, patient quality teams and safety teams at all levels.

Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions
The online R.N. to M.S. bridge program allows registered nurses with considerable practice experience and an associate degree or diploma from an accredited nursing program to take advantage of this streamlined approach to obtain their graduate degree.
Candidates must have a minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse. Two years of experience is preferred.
You will need to complete additional prerequisite* undergraduate coursework before taking any master’s level nursing courses.

You also will need to have a clinical site arrangement one semester before registering for one of the prerequisite courses (Caring for Families and Communities). We will work with you to plan for this and discuss the courses you need to progress toward your M.S. in nursing. Georgia State is well known for our work in student success, and that includes support at each stage of your journey through your graduate work.
Once you begin your master’s level coursework, you will be heading toward a nurse practitioner specialty in one of four areas:

Orchestral Conducting Concentration, Master of Music (M.Mu.)
The Master of Music with a concentration in Orchestral Conducting program at Georgia State University focuses on three primary objectives. We aim to:
- develop and enhance students’ conducting skills through podium time with our GSU Symphony and Campus Orchestra in addition to conducting opportunities with local ensembles
- refine students’ off-the-podium skills in terms of leadership, audience engagement and administration
- prepare students for professional conducting positions (youth orchestras, community orchestras, professional orchestras) as well as continued studies in conducting at the doctoral and postgraduate levels
As part of this comprehensive program, students have the opportunity to serve as assistant conductors for the Georgia Philharmonic and learn from professional orchestras and ensembles in the area: The Atlanta Symphony, Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet, and Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, Bent Frequency & Ensemble ATL. Our students attend rehearsals of the Atlanta Symphony and work with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (ASYO) and Family Concerts in various capacities. We also have a strong relationship with the Metropolitan Symphony Youth Orchestras (MYSO), where our students frequently serve as coaches. The Georgia State Orchestral Conducting concentration is designed to nurture active orchestral conductors, fostering their potential as professional conductors.

Orchestral Instrument Performance Concentration, Master of Music (M.Mu.)
The Georgia State University Master of Music in Orchestral Instrument Performance program prepares students for rewarding careers as performing musicians or studio instructors. This specialized pathway emphasizes the development of a strong foundation in music reading and performance, nurturing students’ skills and musicianship to excel in their chosen orchestral instrument. Through active participation in bands, choirs, or orchestras, students gain valuable ensemble experience and develop the ability to perform collaboratively with others. They also have opportunities to showcase their talent as soloists and in small group settings. With dedicated private study and guidance from experienced faculty, students refine their technical proficiency, musical interpretation and expressive artistry.
Organ Concentration, Master of Music (M.Mu.)
The Master of Music with a concentration in Organ Performance program prepares students for a career in church music, as a concert performer and as a teacher of organ. Completion of the degree normally requires four semesters of full-time study. Graduate organ performance majors are required to give a one-hour lecture recital on a topic of their choice in consultation with the applied teacher and organ faculty.

The graduate programs in the School of Music offer unparalleled opportunities in one of America’s most vibrant urban centers. The school enrolls about 90 students in Master of Music degree programs, Artist Certificate programs, and Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs in music education.
