PAUS
4601 will explore the roles and responsibilities of leaders and ordinary
citizens in contemporary American society in general and in addressing
public issues specifically. The course takes on additional significance
in the aftermath of the events of September 11 as many of us consider
such questions as:
- How can we as individuals strengthen the safety and security of our
communities?
- What should we ask of ourselves as citizens, and what should we ask
of government?
Students
will read about leadership and citizenship, and will hear from notable
leaders in the Atlanta area, including possibly former United Nations
Ambassador Andrew Young and former Georgia Governor Joe Frank Harris.
Students will also have the opportunity to consider-and to develop-their
own leadership potential.
PAUS 4601 is required in the Public Policy track and may be taken as
an elective in the Planning and Economic Development track in the B.S.
in Urban Policy Studies. The course is also an approved elective in the
B. S. in Human Resources Policy and Development.
The
course will be taught by Dr. John C. Thomas, whose own leadership experience
includes eight years as Chair of the Department of Public Administration
and Urban Studies. Dr. Thomas also has written extensively on how citizens
connect with their communities and their governments and how leaders
can improve those connections. (3 credit hours)
Prerequisites: PAUS 3111, PAUS
3311.
See the AYSPS Course Syllabi List. Please
remember that individual faculty vary their course plans over time.
