Clinic Descriptions
(These clinics are held at various times throughout the year)

See the RAP-UP for current semester description of clinics.

Ho Shin Do

This Korean Way of self-defense uses techniques with physical fitness in mind. There are no joint lockouts, the drills can be easily applied, and you learn to develop explosive power through fluid movements which
minimizes the demand for muscular strength.

Bando Kickboxing

Simple, powerful techniques form the extremely effective self-defense and fighting style (similar to Muay Thai) of Bando, the ancient martial system of Burma. This class offers training in martial arts forms, weapons, and animal styles, as well as light-medium, and some full-contact sparring. Offered at GSU since 1973.

Tae Kwon Do

Korean for “the way of the foot and the fist,” evolved from 2000 years
of Korean tradition. Combative, self-defense, sport (Olympics,
tournaments), exercise, entertainment, and Asian philosophy are taught. Tae kwon do focuses on kicks to utilize the longest, strongest weapon, the leg, to disable opponents.

Karate

Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese style of karate that places equal emphasis on kicking and punching. Participants are able to focus the mind and body towards a target and combine it with proper timing to deliver a devastating blow. Equally important, karate develops coordination, quickens reflexes, builds stamina and develops composure.

Hap kido

A Korean art of self-defense that emphasizes breathing techniques, joint locks, strikes and grappling, to effectively control without permanent injury. Effective for women and men of all types of physiques.

Lotus

Students of Lotus not only learn an effective method of self-defense, but they also develop great discipline and self-confidence.

Judo

An Olympic sport and devastating martial art of attack and defense based on the efficient use of ones energy.

Judo for Kids

Children 6-15 are welcomed to register. Judo is a fun martial arts discipline that incorporates grappling and throwing skills. This class will focus not only on Judo skills, but also coordination, balance, and learning to work with others.

Jujitsu

Traditional Japanese martial art utilized by the samurai encompassing all forms of attack, defense and weapons. Judo, Kendo, Aikido, Kung Fu, and Muay Thai (Thai Boxing). Students of Lotus not only learn an effective method of self-defense, but they also develop great discipline and self-confidence.

Capoeira

This unique art originated as a fighting style based on rhythmic patterns. The intent was to disguise the martial art as dance. While Capoeira originated in Africa, the strong Brazilian influence forms the basis for this class.

Lotus Self Defense

Lotus Self Defense is a martial arts style from Thailand. We teach basic
moves: punches, kicks, blocks and rolls with an emphasis on practical
self-defense. Lotus is a combination of Thai kick-boxing, Aikido, Judo and Kenpo karate.

Moyo Nguvu System of Afrikan Martial Arts

The Moyo Nguvu system or "System of Spiritual Strength" focuses on South African Boxing, Capoeira, and Shackel Hand (grappling) techniques. The system is well rounded and is an effective form of self-defense in addition to a rhythmic art form.

Beginning Shotokan Karate

Basic technique for punching, kicking, blocking and body dynamics. Principles such as linear movement, body rotation, and shifting weight are covered. At this level, there is minimal physical contact, if any.

Intermediate Shotokan Karate

Build on the principles learned in prior training in Shokotan Karate classes. There will be basic sparring drills but contact will be kept to a minimum.

Martial Art Form-Moving Mediation Tai Chi

Tai Chi uses Yang-style 24 form as Moving Mediation. It incorporates slow-motion movements to balance and strengthen the body while its mental concepts calm the emotions and reduce stress. Appropriate for any fitness level and no previous experience necessary.

Kayti African Stick Play

Represents the origins of all weaponry. Though centered in Africa (primarily Kenya), the roots come from all over Africa. Kayti is the predecessor to modern swordplay (from China) and the better known Islamic Kali (from Philippines).

Fu Hok

Fu Hok Yao Gon Fut Pai Kuen "brings the hard out through the soft". A cross between Wing Chun and Tai Chi, Fu Hok sharpens the mind, soothes the spirit and tones the body. While the meditative aspect of the art enhances spiritual muscle, in the hands of a skilled practitioner, the Fu Hok is an effective and punishing martial system. More info at : www.fuhok.org.
