My training and experience focus on the diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology, psychodynamic theories, and theory and practice of clinical supervision. I have a special interest in using these theories with people of color, especially African Americans. I have focused my teaching, writing and supervision in recent years in reformulating existing theories to include the multicultural context that influences diagnosis and treatment of African American women. My research interests are in understanding what factors affect the development of cultural competence in psychotherapy training, supervision, and treatment. I believe a further understanding of ethnocultural resistance, transference, and countertransference will embellish our understanding of the therapy process with people of color. I recently edited a book with Beverly Greene, Ph.D., "Psychotherapy with African American women: Innovations in Psychodynamic Perspectives and Practice" that illustrates what is useful and what is problematic when applying psychodynamic concepts to African American women. Winner of the 2001 Distinguished Publication Award from the Association for Women in Psychology.

Additionally, I supervise clinical students in the Psychology clinic in both individual and group work, and serve as the Coordinator for the Undergraduate Practicum program in the department.
