Walking and Cycling
It’s common knowledge that Atlanta’s traffic can be overwhelming at times. To help you avoid wasting time on the highway, here are some suggestions for pedestrian modes of transportation.
Walking
Downtown Atlanta and the Georgia State campus in particular boast ample sidewalks to make walking quick and safe. You’ll see members of the Georgia State Police Department, one of the largest campus police forces in the country, around on foot, bicycle and car, keeping an eye out for students. On the busiest stretches where students need to cross the street, police monitor and enforce crosswalks.
Throughout campus, you’ll find a variety of eating establishments that you can easily reach on foot, many of which offer student discounts. Plus, PantherExpress and MARTA extend the range of what’s accessible.
Cycling
Bicycles are a surprisingly easy way to get around Atlanta. Just look:
- Atlanta has an expanding system of bike paths and bike lanes throughout the city.
- Most downtown areas have wide roads with adequate room for bikes.
- Bike-mounted police patrol the campus area and increase motorists' awareness of bicycle traffic.
- Bike lock-up racks located in well-trafficked areas are available near most classroom buildings.
- Bicycles are allowed on MARTA trains all hours of the day. MARTA buses all have bike racks mounted on them for easy multi-mode transportation.
