Creative Loafing Names WRAS Best Non-Commercial Radio Station (September 21, 2012)

GSTV Receives Two CBI Nominations (August 31, 2012)

GSTV received two nominations for the 2012 Student Production Awards from College Broadcast Inc. (CBI).

The GSTV website is nominated for Best Student Media Website. The station is also nominated in Best Special TV Broadcast category for its coverage (Andrew Mixon, producer/editor, Aryeonne Johnson, host/interviewer) of the Hunger Games mall tour in Atlanta.

GSU Modern Media Conference (August 15, 2012)

GSTV and The Signal are co-sponsoring the Modern Media Conference at the Georgia State University Student Center on September 28-29, 2012.

Among the presenters will be Tim Harrower (author of Inside Reporting and The Newspaper Designer’s Handbook), Jovita Moore (Channel 2 Action News), Michael Koretzky (http://www.editorandpublisher.com/Newsletter/Features/-Journoterrorist--Teaches-Students-It-s-OK-To-Fail), Scott McFarlane (Assistant Program Director, WCNN /WFOM /WIFN), (Hollie Mannheimer (Director of the Georgia First Amendment Foundation), Jamie Morrison (CNN Senior Assignment Manager), Scott Tufts (Executive Producer, truTV) reporter and Matt Bors (cartoonist and Pulitzer Prize finalist).

The Residence Inn in downtown Atlanta will be providing a preferred rate for the conference. Rooms are $119 a night with complimentary breakfast and wifi. The Signal Receives Honors at GCPA, SEJC (February 13, 2012)

The Signal received recognition at two regional student journalism conferences during the month of February.

GSU's student paper collected six 1st place finishes among its seven collective and four individual placements in the 2011 Georgia College Press Association Better Newspaper contest. The contest results were announced at a ceremony on February 5 at the Classic Center in Athens. The following weekend, four Signal staff members from the 2011 calendar year claimed Top 10 finishes at the Southeastern Journalism Conference's "Best of the South" contest.

The Signal placed 2nd in the GCPA's General Excellence (4 Year Division A) category. The paper also claimed three 1st place 4Yr-A awards: Best Community Features (News), Layout & Design and Improvement. In addition, the paper placed 3rd in Best Editorial or Editorial Series and the Best Community Features categories of Sports and Features.

Division A refers to student newspapers from 4 Year Georgia colleges and universities with enrollments above 8,000 students. Members include The Technique (Georgia Institute of Technology), The Emory Wheel, The George-Anne(Georgia Southern), The Cluster (Mercer), The Spectator (Valdosta State), The District (Savannah State), and The Inkwell (Armstrong Atlantic State).

Three Signal writers claimed 1st place awards in GCPA's individual 4 Year Division (A & B) awards. Zakkiyya Anderson won a 1st place award for the second straight year, claiming Best Feature for her February piece, "From Curry with love." Saakib Zafrani topped the Best News Photograph category for his September photo of a mock dormitory fire demonstration. Zack Kraimer's April feature on Atlanta's "Sweetest Treats" won 1st place in the Entertainment Feature category.

The Southeast Journalism Conference was held at the University of Tennessee-Martin and featured 433 entries from 41 colleges across eight southeastern states. Current Signal Editor-in-Chief Miranda Sain finished 2nd in the Best Essay category for her analysis of the Snyder v. Phelps case. Also earning Top 10 finishes at SEJC were Jhoni Jackson (4th in Arts & Entertainment writing), Antonio Rosales (7th among Editorial Cartoonists) and DJ Dunson (10th in Sports writing). 

In addition to these honors, Signal Senior Editor Sabastian Wee claimed three placements in GCPA's 2 Year category for his work for Georgia Perimeter's paper, The Collegian.  Wee, who transferred to GSU in the Fall of 2011, claimed a 1st place (Best News Article- Investigative), 2nd place (Best Photograph- Sports) and 3rd place (Best Column) award. The Collegian claimed six 1st place in six general categories in the Two Year Division, including General Excellence.

Wee was elected to the GCPA Board of Directors and Signal Photography Editor Judith Kim was elected as Treasurer.

Signal a Pacemaker nominee, new New South on school newsstands (September 1, 2011)

New South, Volume 4, Issue 2 is now available on school newsstands, featuring the winners of the 2011 Poetry and Short Fiction contests.  This issue is also the final issue edited by Jim May, who served as Editor-in-Chief for three years.

The Signal is one of 22 newspapers across the United States featured as a finalist for the 2011 Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker award in the four-year weekly category.  For the full list of finalists in the Pacemaker contest, visit http://studentpress.org/acp/winners/npm11.html.

Underground is Now Available on Campus!, New South on Verse Daily (May 2, 2011)

The inaugural issue of Underground is now available at Georgia State University. If you are unable to locate a copy, visit the New South office at 946 General Classroom Building or the Student Media Advisor's office in 330 Student Center.

The first edition of Underground is edited by Will Holland and features six short stories, 16 poems and a number of art pieces/drawings from GSU students.

Underground is a new literary journal dedicated solely to the art & literary contributions of the GSU community.    The second issue of Volume One will be available in the summer.

Panther Report Finishes in Top 3 For Apple Award (March 16, 2011)

GSTV received a Third Place mention for its Panther Report entry for the 2011 David L. Adams Apple Awards.  The awards were announced at the national College Media Advisers spring conference, held in New York City from March 13-15, 2011.

The Apple Awards recognize excellence in student media in a variety of platforms across the United States.  Awards were handed out in 11 categories in 2011.  The entire list of Top 3 finalists in all categories can be found here.

Manning's Poem to Appear in Best American Poetry 2011 (February 14, 2011) 

Maurice Manning's short poem "The Complaint Against Roney Laswell's Rooster," which was first published in New South 3(1), , has been selected for the anthology Best American Poetry 2011.

The poem was one of three from Manning to appear in the journal.  Manning, an Associate Chair of Creative Writing at Indiana University-Bloomington, published his fourth book, The Common Man, in 2010.

David Lehman began The Best American Poetry anthology in 1988.  It annually acknowledges the seventy-five best poems culled from magazines and journals across the United States according to a guest editor and by the standarized criteria established by Lehman.

The Signal 1st in Excellence at GCPA Awards (February 7, 2011)

The Signal won top honors for General Excellence (4 Year Division A) in the 2010 Georgia College Press Association Better Newspaper contest.  The contest results were announced at a ceremony held this past Saturday, February 5, at the Classic Center in Athens.

The award was one of 12 Top 3 placements overall for Georgia State's student newspaper in the 4 Year Division A category.  Division A refers to student newspapers from 4 Year Georgia colleges and universities with enrollments above 8,000 students.  Members include The Technique (Georgia Institute of Technology), The Emory Wheel, The George-Anne (Georgia Southern), The Cluster (Mercer), The Spectator (Valdosta State), The District (Savannah State), and The Inkwell (Armstrong Atlantic State).

The paper also received seven placements (two 1st and five 2nd) in "General" categories.  Along with the General Excellence award, it also received 1st place for Excellence in Best Community Service Features.  It placed 2nd in the categories of Improvement, News, Editorial, Sports and Layout and Design. 

In Individual Awards, Megan Urry and Zakkiyah Anderson each received first place rankings.  Urry won Best News Article Based on Investigative Reporting for her article on a publishers' lawsuit alleging copyright infringement against GSU.  Anderson's feature on GSU cornerback Demarius Matthews received the award for Best Sports Story.

Saakib Zafrani claimed 2nd place in the Sports category for his profile of football coach Bill Curry, while Whitney Jones' article on the revival of Atlanta's Royal Peacock music venue placed 2nd for Best Entertainment story.  Miranda Sain's 3rd place finish- for her column on the HOPE scholarship- was the only individual placement in Best Editorial or Editorial Series category.
