COURTYARD MUSIC SERIESMontana SkiesTuesday, April 1912:30 p.m.- 1:30 p.m.Courtyard Stage(Student Center next to Food Court)Jonathan and Jennifer met while studying music at the University of Georgia, in Athens, GA. Recognizing a kindred spirit in each other's devotion to their music, the desire to share music together was ignited immediately. The two assumed they would be performing classical recitals and great works for the cello and guitar; then, in one trip to the library to select music, their whole world of classical intentions came crashing down. The discovery: music written for cello and guitar was as rare as the combination itself -- no great classical works existed. What resulted from this new musical freedom of expression between the two was the formation of “Montana Skies”, and a unique style of music that would garner instant recognition and praise. Jonathan explains, "The fact that 'ready made' repertoire is not available for our combination of instruments is really what pushes us to be more creative with our music. We love composing and arranging, and appreciate the opportunity to present old favorites, along with newer music, to our audiences." This event is free, no ticket required, and open to all students, faculty, staff and the public. Supported by Student Activity Fees. |

COURTYARD SERIESBen Kronberg:ComedianApril 14, 2011:12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.mBen Kronberg's star is certainly on the rise. Ben's unique style blends clever one-liners and witty observations with catchy songs that he performs while playing instruments like the guitar, casio-keyboard, and loop-pedal. Much of his material has been inspired by girlfriends, who are now incidentally ex-girlfriends. Since his breakout performance in Aspen, Ben has performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Last Call with Carson Daly. Comedy Central recently named Ben as "Comics to Watch" in 2010. Ben has also appeared twice on ABC's hit game show, Wipeout - one time as a normal contestant, and most recently in the All-Star Episode. He lost both times, but would still go back for a third helping of pain if asked. |

COURTYARD MUSIC SERIESAn Evening of MusicMarch 17, 20116:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.Featuring: Jared MahoneWhat?! A white guy from Ohio singing soul music and beatboxing to cheering crowds night after night? It seems hard to believe, but that is exactly what Jared Mahone consistently makes audiences do - believe. His authenticity comes through loud and clear, and by that first chorus you will find yourself grooving along to Jared's decidedly soulful acoustic funk. Jared approached his 2010 release, The Mixtape Project in a unique way. Instead of choosing his favorite 10 songs and releasing a traditional album, he decided to write one new song every week and release them for fans digitally. I thought, instead of me deciding what album I wanted people to hear, what if I just released a bunch of material and let people decide which songs were their favorite, Jared says. The best part is that the subscribers are the ones who are helping to shape the album as it happens. |

COURTYARD MUSIC SERIESLiza DayFolk, AcousticMarch 8, 201112:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.mBorn Lindsey Czechowicz, her stage name, Liza Day is one half affectionate nickname and one half borrowed from social justice crusader Dorothy Day. Her music reflects this marriage, half diary-page-reflection and half public service announcement, with sounds appropriated from, well, wherever. From Appalachian folk she borrows rustic textures and deadpan storytelling. From the margins of pop she takes a disregard for tired conventions. From classic rock she borrows a dash of grit and recklessness. From old soul and gospel she borrows the secrets of voicing urgent conviction with the most human of all instruments. It's all there, it isn't particularly tidy, and ultimately it's nobody's but her own. |
