Presidents Awards Information

Georgia State University is committed to improving its local community through service and social action. As part of this commitment, University President Mark Becker and the Georgia State Office of Civic Engagement continue to offer the President's Awards for Community Service and Social Action to recognize students, student organizations, faculty, staff, and community partners who are making significant contributions to the greater Atlanta community through their outstanding commitment to service.

Recipients of the President's Awards for Community Service and Social Action will have demonstrated the University's philosophy and commitment to developing positive connections with our community to gain a better understanding of civic responsibility.

Nominations

THE NOMINATION PERIOD FOR 2012 IS CURRENTLY CLOSED.  Please check back in 2013 for information on the upcoming nomination period.

To be considered for an award, students and student organizations must submit their community service hours online through their Volunteer Solutions account by the end of the year, December 31, 2011.

Members of the Georgia State community are encouraged to nominate students, faculty and staff who exemplify the University's dedication to service. The President's Awards are based on the University's Statement of Commitment, which identifies unifying principles for the campus community to follow. The awards are presented to faculty members, staff members and students who have performed community service in the local area or state. To be eligible, the nominee must have been in involved in a community service project during the two years preceding the nomination.

Nominations should include a nomination form and supporting material with the following information: projects with which the nominee has been involved, the name(s) of the project's organizer(s), the project's activities, names of people who participated in the project, and a description of how participants benefited from the project.

Additional information could include: how many community members were impacted by the project, how diverse the impacted group was (gender, race/ethnicity, age, income, religion, etc), to what extent the project was innovative/creative, and the level of impact on the community as a whole, beyond its direct impact on participants. These supporting materials should include participant feedback sheets, letters of support from the community and/or organization being served, newspaper articles covering the event, videotapes and any additional materials deemed appropriate.

Letters and supporting materials should be sent to the Office of Civic Engagement, Student Center, Suite 320 (Civic Engagement, P.O Box 3973, Atlanta, GA 30302-3973). Nominations will be forwarded to the President's Awards selection committee, who will make the final decisions for the awards.

The Awards

Outstanding Community Impact Award (Student Only)

The President's Outstanding Community Impact Award is given to individual students who have made community service or social action an integral part of their college experience by making significant contributions to the community.

Outstanding Campus Impact Award (Student Group Only)

The President's Outstanding Campus Impact Award is given to student organizations that have demonstrated excellence in creating, developing and/or sustaining opportunities to address campus and community needs.

Outstanding Faculty or Staff Member Award

The President's Outstanding Staff Member Award is given to a university faculty or staff member who has demonstrated excellence in providing, developing, and/or sustaining opportunities for students to engage in community service/social action, while addressing a community need.

Outstanding University Program Award

The President's Outstanding University Program Award is given to an academic or co-curricular program or course that has achieved excellence in creating, developing and/or sustaining opportunities for community service/social action and learning, while addressing a community need.

Outstanding Community Partner Award

The President's Outstanding Community Partner Award is given to a community based organization that has demonstrated excellence in partnering with a college or department by providing opportunities for Georgia State students to engage in community service/social action and has addressed a community need.
