Community Service Awards
The Office of Civic Engagement would like to congratulate the 2007 honorees of our Community Service Awards.
2007 Collaboration Award: This is a group award that is presented to a student organization that has developed partnerships with other student groups and/or community organizations to better accomplish its service goals. This year's award was presented to the Georgia State chapter of the Economic Empowerment Initiative. This group worked with more than twenty different student and community organizations to promote economic empowerment and fulfil their mission of "helping students on high school and college campuses understand how to manage their financial resources."
2007 Margaret Mead Award: This award is based on Mead's advice, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." In the spirit of these words, the 2007 award was presented to Mission: Mentor, a student group that seeks to empower inner city youth by helping them focus on essential skills they need to prosper in a complicated society.
2007 MLK Leadership Award: This award is presented to a student leader who has persisted in making a difference in the community. The 2007 recipient was Paula Neves, President of the Brazilian Student Association (BRASA), and student manager for the Georgia State soccer team. Ms. Neves was honored as a dependable leader with vision and passion for her work. She has coordinated a number of programs on campus, including the Latino Moving Forward Rally, a Portuguese tutoring program and high school mentoring programs.
