Mission Statement
The mission of Safe Zone State is to promote a welcoming, inclusive, and emotionally, as well as physically safe environment for LGBTQIQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Questioning) students, faculty, and staff through developing a network of allies who have been trained in LGBTQIQ issues, holding campus wide programs on LGBTQIQ issues and providing LGBTQIQ information to the general campus population. The program is designed to reduce homophobia, transphobia, and heterosexism by raising awareness of the presence of these-isms and potential impact on individuals in our community.
The members of Safe Zone State, committee, trainers, and allies are a team of interdisciplinary staff, faculty, and students within the university who are committed to increase awareness and acceptance of the LGBTQIQ community. We provide education, training, and support related to LGBTQIQ issues in order to increase knowledge of the diversity of sexual identity and gender identity. The Safe Zone State symbol, the rainbow paw, signifies a safe place to discuss issues that impact LGBTQIQ individuals and to provide information on the available resources.
