Veterans FAQ

Who is eligible to receive VA benefits?

Students who have served in the army, navy, air force, reserves, or national guard are eligble for VA benefits. Students whose veteran parent is either 100% disabled or deceased or had their GI Bill transferred to them are eligible.

All veterans need to fill out the Online Veterans' Enrollment Verification Form. This is for new, continuing and transfers.

Georgia State has only four types of benefits: the GI Bill Post-9/11, Tuition Assistance, Hero Scholarship and Voc Rehab. The Tuition Assistance is usually for reservists or the national guard and student accounts processes TA. The Hero Scholarship in processed through the Financial Aid Office.

What is necessary to receive these benefits?

You will have to be a student at GSU, have a DD-214, release papers from the service, and complete the VA form 22-1990 and the Online Veterans' Enrollment Verification Form. For dependents, complete the VA form 22-5490 and the Veterans' Enrollment Verification Form. For Transfer of Entitlement, form 22-1990E and the Veterans' Enrollment Verification Form.

What are the benefits?

Full time students receive a monthly benefit of approximately $1300 a month. Dependents receive approximately $900 a month. With the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the students' tuition and fees are paid and the student receives $1194 towards housing and book money of approximately $500.

Can I receive VA benefits and have financial aid?

Yes, but you will get less financial aid depending on the amount you get from the VA. You cannot get the HOPE scholarship and Post-9/11 benefits.

What do I need to do when I withdraw or drop a course?

Let the VA representative know by phone, fax, or in person.

Can I get a waiver for my fees?

No, you are responsible for your fees. The VA benefit is a reimbursement to you.

How long does it take to get the benefits?

It usually takes 6-8 weeks for you to be processed by the Veterans Affairs office.
