Graduate Assistantships

Part Time - Entry Level
Required Education: 4 Year Degree
There are many exciting opportunities for graduate students to be involved with Georgia State University's Department of Recreational Services. We are seeking graduate students who desire to gain work related experiences in one or more of the following areas: Intramurals, Sport Clubs, Fitness Testing/Personal Training, Aquatics, Outdoor Recreation, and Instructional Programs/Group Fitness. Note: Fitness Testing/Personal training candidates must be pursing a graduate degree in Exercise Science.
Aquatics - Teach lifeguard training and water safety instruction; Assist with supervision of student lifeguards and aquatic instructors; Manage off-campus pool during summer semester (Indian Creek Recreation Area); Assist with pool and facility operations, including risk management; Coordinate special events with other student and staff members
Facility Management - Assist with management of Student Recreation Center: locker management, inventory control, access control, supervision of Game Room, Equipment Issue Desk and drop-in recreation areas; Assist with supervision of student employees: interviewing, hiring, training and evaluation; Coordinate scheduling; enforce policies; Coordinate special events with other student and staff members
Fitness Center - Manage daily operation of Fitness Center; Conduct fitness assessments, personal training, and cholesterol screens; Review client health history including risk stratification; Coordinate special events with other student and staff members
Instructional Programs/Group Fitness - Coordinate instructor training and evaluation; Assist with scheduling and registration of programs; Assist with maintenance of facility and supplies; Coordinate special events with other student and staff members
Intramural Sports - Assist with coordination, promotion, administration and evaluation of program; Assist with scheduling of team sports, hiring, training and supervising assistants and officials; Keep records, prepare reports, and attend weekly meetings; Enforce policies and safety guidelines; Schedule and conduct disciplinary meetings with players; Coordinate special events with other student and staff members
Outdoor Recreation - Manage daily operation of outdoor equipment rental program; Assist with trip logistics; Manage inventory including inspection and maintenance; Coordinate equipment loading and unloading for weekend trips; Assist with coordination of publicity for Outdoor program; Coordinate special events with other student and staff members
Stipend - Up to $4,500 per Fall and Spring semester plus $2,362 for summer, with in-state/out-of-state tuition waiver. The appointment is on a semester-to-semester basis dependent upon job performance and funding.
Fees - Assume responsibility for all student fees ( ~$1064 for Spring of 2012)
Also, students must provide documentation of health/medical insurance or purchase the mandatory health insurance through GSU (www.studentinsurance.com and select Georgia State University / Pearce and Pearce).
Requirements: Pre-requisite experience/knowledge qualifications are particular to each position and program area. All applicants must apply to the appropriate college to be considered. All applicants must be accepted prior to Recreation offering a position. Applicants should familiarize themselves with the application deadlines relevant to their program. If hired all are responsible for working 20 hours per week.

The Department of Recreational Services is housed in the 161,000 square foot, $30 million Student Recreation Center (SRC). Two off-campus sites are also managed by the department; Panthersville Recreation Complex, an outdoor lighted multipurpose athletic field area and the Indian Creek Recreation Area which includes a multipurpose lodge, outdoor pool, tennis courts, sand volleyball, ropes course and picnic area

The following positions are filled for the 2012-2013 year
Sport Clubs - Assist with overall administration of the Sport Club Program; Responsible for maintaining Club documentation; Assist with new Club creation and organization; Develop Sport Club training guides for Club officers and advisors; Enforce policies and safety guidelines; Coordinate special events with other student and staff members
Challenge Program - Facilitate Team Building events with initiatives/games, and low & high ropes elements; Communicate with clients during all processes of registration; Perform accounting & record keeping for events; assist with payroll of program staff; Coordinate facilitators for each event; assist with coordination of belay staff; Purchase supplies and materials (if applicable) for each event; Coordinate special events with other student and staff members
Marketing - Develop department marketing and promotion materials; Assist with the layout and design of all department program materials; Market facilities, programs and special event to the campus community; Research marketing tools, venues and media opportunities; Coordinate special events with other student and staff members
Transportation - Coordinate use of department vehicle fleet; Ensure training and certification for fleet operators; Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of vehicle fleet; Update Transportation Operations Manual as needed; Keep records and prepare reports; Coordinate special events with other student and staff members.
