Position Description

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost

Georgia State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.

Founded in 1913, Georgia State has a mission of excellence in teaching, research and service.  Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, this leading urban research university has an enrollment of more than 28,000 undergraduate and graduate students in six colleges:  the J. Mack Robinson College of Business, the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, and the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Education, Health and Human Sciences, and Law.  Georgia State is the second largest university in Georgia, with students coming to the University from every state in the nation.  Additionally, the university’s international character is reflected in part by the enrollment of over 3200 students from 159 countries, as well as by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award in 2004 for outstanding contributions in international education.

Georgia State’s mission as a research university in an urban setting is multi-faceted, devoted to excellence in undergraduate education, graduate and professional education, and faculty scholarship of the highest order.  The University has one of the most diverse undergraduate student populations in the United States, and attracts outstanding young scholars and professional students to its many programs.  The University’s colleges boast distinguished faculty across disciplines, who work closely with the university administration to guide the strategic future of the University.

The University has grown dramatically over the last decade, extending its urban mission as well as its breadth in basic research and education.  The University launched a comprehensive planning effort that produced the Main Street Master Plan. This strategy has resulted in the addition of 14 new or renovated facilities for the University, for research, teaching and student activities. The initiative was renewed in 2006, and plans are now underway for $1 billion in new facilities for the campus.  The now-completed capital campaign raised over $127 million for academic programs, professorships, endowed chairs, scholarships and facilities.

Georgia State University offers a vibrant research and teaching atmosphere.  The University has made rapid gains in external funding since being named a Research University by the Board of Regents in the 1990s, with over $60 million in external funding obtained during 2007.  Dramatic expansion of science facilities is underway, and the University is developing plans for a new professional complex for its schools of Law and Business.  The entrance qualifications of GSU incoming freshmen have risen sharply in the past decade, with numbers of applicants increasing from just over 5,000 in 1997 to over 10,000 for Fall 2009.

Another significant change for Georgia State has been the move of the University’s NCAA Division I athletics program to a new conference.  In 2005, after a 20-year association with the Atlantic Sun Conference, Georgia State joined the Colonial Athletic Association.  This transition has enabled Georgia State athletic teams the opportunity to compete with other institutions similar in size and scope, and provides increased  exposure in many of the nation’s top media markets, including New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
