Much of this applied research is directed at understanding and eliminating disparities in health. The Institute is also engaged in extending research into practice through community partnerships and furthering the strategic goals of Georgia State University.

The university is committed to advancing the Institute to an accredited School of Public Health and is searching for a founding Dean to lead this transition.  The new Dean will chart a path and provide vision and guidance in all aspects of the school’s educational programs, research endeavors, and community outreach and service programs.  The Dean is the chief executive officer of the school as well as its principal spokesperson to academic and public health communities, students, and alumni. We are seeking a dynamic leader to bring the school to prominence locally, nationally, and internationally.  The Dean should be an energetic and accomplished scholar/administrator, with a history of decisive and innovative leadership, who will advance the School’s commitment to increasing collaboration, innovation, and consultation, in addition to its research and scholarship while providing continued high quality public health education.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Significant experience in public health education and a distinguished record of funded research and scholarly achievement.
  • Commitment to expanding and diversifying revenue sources, including private and public funding, and successful experience in fundraising and resource development.
  • Demonstrated successful leadership and management abilities, and a track record of collaboration and consensus building.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong, collaborative relationships that foster inter-disciplinary research and scholarship.
  • Commitment to improving health equity and reducing health disparities, and improving and protecting the public’s health.
  • Commitment to recruiting and developing a diverse and talented faculty.
  • Dedication to the educational goals of a diverse and highly-qualified student body.
  • Ability to represent the school in the regional, national, and international public health communities.
  • Commitment to developing the public health workforce, particularly for the urban environment.
  • Experience and interest in developing international partnerships.

The Dean is a key member of Georgia State University’s leadership team, serving as a strategist, advocate, leader, and effective spokesperson for academic and student concerns as well as other matters related to the success of the School of Public Health. The ideal candidate is a public health leader of national prominence with the requisite experience in administration, teaching, research, and community service to address the challenges facing public health education and provide the leadership and vision needed to set, and to achieve, the school’s priorities and goals.  This position requires a doctoral or equivalent terminal degree (MD, PhD, DPH, or similar) in public health or a related field from an accredited institution as well as demonstrated scholarly distinction appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of professor.
