Founding Honors College dean named
Georgia State University Provost Risa Palm announced April 21 that Larry Berman, currently professor of political science at the University of California-Davis, will serve as the founding dean of the university's Honors College, effective Jan. 3, 2012. "President Becker and I look forward to working with Dr. Berman to launch the Honors College on a trajectory that will fulfill a major component of the university Strategic Plan goal of building a national model for undergraduate education," the provost said.
Kudos
For the second year in a row, a team of students from Georgia State University College of Law took first place in the Dean Jerome Prince Memorial Moot Court Competition. The team of third-year law students, Casey Viggiano, Eli Bennett and Chris DeNeve, coached by Crystal Genteman, defeated a team from Southwestern Law School in the final round. In addition, Viggiano took Best Oralist honors in the final round.
Paul Ferraro, professor of economics in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, received a Fulbright Scholar award to lecture and conduct research in Costa Rica during spring semester of 2012. Ferraro will be working at the Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza on an initiative to quantify the mechanisms through which environmental policies aimed at protecting endangered ecosystems affect environmental and economic outcomes.
Raheem Beyah, assistant professor of computer science, received a two-year, $400,000 grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, which is part of the U.S. Department of Defense and is responsible for the development of new technology for use by the military. Beyah is working on a security system to stop authorized computer and other technology users from abusing their privileges.
