Keith Sumas, Director of Emergency Management
Keith Sumas has over 17 years of experience in public safety that includes law enforcement, emergency management and security. As a law enforcement officer, he has been assigned to patrol, undercover investigations, and crime prevention. He has completed over 2,500 training hours from 200 courses in various public safety areas from terrorism to tactical operations to peer counseling.
Keith has been a coordinator with the Georgia Office of Homeland Security assisting agencies with approval of emergency operation plans, offering technical assistance through site surveys and physical security assessments. He has been tasked with the preparation of drills and exercises for all hazards, even role-playing in many of them. He has been requested to assist in many suspicious package, bomb threat, and civil unrest incidents that were classified as high risk situations in Georgia like the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, 2004 G-8 Economic Summit Protests and the 2005 Courthouse Shooting Rampage. Keith has worked as an action officer to some of the floods and hurricanes that impacted South Carolina, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. He was also requested to serve as an agency liaison during the disaster of Hurricane Katrina that struck New Orleans, in which affected his hometown. Keith served in the United States Peace Corps/Eastern Caribbean from 2006-2008, where he volunteered as a teacher and assisted with safety, security and emergency management on the island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
He has been a security officer/consultant at several venue sites in the Metro Atlanta Area such as Philips Arena, Atlanta Braves Turner Field, Georgia Dome, Georgia World Congress Center, and the Georgia Aquarium.
Keith received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi and completed his Master's Degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University. Additionally, he became a Certified Emergency Manager in 2008 and then was awarded in 2010 as a Master Certified Emergency Manager.
Jennifer J. McWhorter, Fire Safety Officer
Jennifer J. McWhorter is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. She earned a Bachelor of Science from Spelman College, in Atlanta, Georgia with a major in Natural Science. Her career in fire safety began with the Atlanta Fire Department where she served as a Fire Education Specialist Senior. She taught numerous fire safety classes across the City of Atlanta that targeted audiences from pre-kindergarten to senior citizens. Jennifer enhanced her career by cross training in fire inspection that paved her way to success. She received formal fire inspection training from the Georgia Public Safety Training Center and the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department where she obtained certification as a Fire Inspector. She continued her professional career by obtaining national certification from National Fire Protection Association as a Certified Fire Inspector I. Jennifer generated self inspiration to go back to school after 15 years, to obtain a Master of Health Administration in 2006 that prepared her for management in the area of safety and risk management. Jennifer retired from the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department after 22 years of services as a Fire Education Specialist and Fire Inspector. She began her second career in Fire Inspection with Georgia Institute of Technology, in Atlanta, Georgia. She served as a Fire Safety Specialist (Fire Inspector) in Environmental Health and Safety at Georgia Tech and was a deputized as Fire Inspector by the Georgia State Fire Marshal's Office for three years. While working at Georgia Tech, Jennifer continued her career education in fire inspection by obtaining certification as a Fire Inspector II and National Professional Qualifications (NPQ) Certified Inspector I and II.
Jennifer comes to Georgia State University with a wealth of knowledge and training in fire inspection. She is excited to continue her career as the Fire Officer by working with GSU staff and students to continue to maintain a safe place to work, learn and stay in downtown Atlanta.
