ATLANTA—Georgia State’s 4th annual Film Festival is partnering for the first time with the High Museum of Art.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will run from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on April 23-24 at the GSU Cinefest Film Theatre, before the finalists are screened at the High Museum of Art at 7:30 p.m. on April 26.
The festival will feature films from students enrolled in narrative, documentary, experimental and new media courses in the Department of Communication during the 2011-12 academic year.
“The festival has grown considerably from its humble beginnings. This year we're taking it up a notch by partnering with the High Museum and having sponsors donate prizes for the award winning films,” said Daniel Robin, an assistant professor of film and video and the festival creator. “By partnering with the High, the Department of Communications and the film program is reaching out to the film going community in Atlanta, saying, ‘Hey, we have something substantial going on here at GSU.’”
The festival awards are: Best Documentary, Best Narrative, Best Experimental and a jury prize designated for a category based on what has been submitted. Some of the prizes include, a year membership at the High Museum and a color correction/sound mix at a local post house.
“By giving actual prizes to the student award winning films, we're not only acknowledging their work, but giving them something that they can use both as creative inspiration and practical post production services that are otherwise very costly,” Robin said.
Robin, along with GSU communication faculty Jennifer Barker, Alessandra Raengo and Laura Zaylea will judge the films, which are limited to 15 minutes. Each student can submit up to three films, Robin said.
"GSU houses one of the most diverse film schools in the Southeast and our Film Fest provides the community with the rare opportunity to get a glimpse of the future of the film scene here in our city," said Kristan Woolford, a GSU graduate research assistant and one of the key organizers for the festival.
