ATLANTA — Larry Berman, founding dean of the Honors College at Georgia State University, will speak Nov. 8 to the Foreign Correspondents' Club in Hong Kong about the fascinating story of a former Time Magazine reporter who was also a Vietnamese communist agent.
Berman, a renowned expert on the Vietnam War and author of several books on the subject, will speak about Pham Xuan An, who led a double life and was identified by Vietnamese communists as their most important and productive spy during the war – yet worked as a respected journalist for the Reuters news service and then Time Magazine.
Berman detailed An's life in his 2007 book, "Perfect Spy: The Incredible Double Life of Pham Xuan An, Time Magazine Reporter & Vietnamese Communist Agent."
The Foreign Correspondents' Club, one of the most famous press clubs in the world, hosts distinguished speakers from around the globe.
Berman, formerly of the University of California, Davis, will have a new book published in 2013 about the life and times of Adm. Elmo Russell Zumwalt Jr., a naval commander who initiated sweeping reforms that modernized the fleet and challenged institutional racism in the 1970’s.
