ATLANTA— Georgia State University’s Rialto Center for the Arts will kick off its 2010-11 series this weekend with a flamenco performance that is an example of the exciting international events planned for this season.
Spain’s most-acclaimed flamenco troupe, Noche Flamenca, featuring Soledad Barrio, will perform at 8 p.m. on Oct. 23 at the Rialto, located at 80 Forsyth St.
Noche Flamenca dancers are known for their transcendent, emotional performance style and are recognized as today’s most authentic champions of flamenco. Tickets prices start at $21.
The Rialto's 2010-11 series strives to feature a unique mix of the best jazz, world music, dance and more and includes remarkable performers never before seen in Atlanta, as well as returning favorites.
“The upcoming season features performance after performance that will not only thrill and entertain audiences but also challenge, uplift, and inspire them,” said Leslie Gordon, director of the Rialto. “We believe that our 2010-11 season will truly be the place where audiences can travel without moving—where Atlanta meets the world.”
Following the Noche Flamenca, the Rialto will present the varied artistry of Mexican chanteuse Lila Downs at 8 p.m. on Oct. 30, and Grammy-winning vocalist Angélique Kidjo at 8 p.m. on Nov. 13.
France’s Ballet Preljocaj, a contemporary French dance troupe, will perform at 5 p.m. on Nov. 7 and jazz innovator John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension at 8 p.m. on Nov. 20.
The fall semester will round out with the festive Gala Holiday Concert by the GSU School of Music at 8 p.m. on Dec. 4 and 3 p.m. on Dec. 5, as well as Holiday Jazz Vespers featuring the Atlanta Jazz Chorus at 8 p.m. on Dec. 11.
In the spring, Atlanta’s “Best World Music Venue” will also welcome Brazil’s Balé Folclórico da Bahia, South Africa’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Cuba’s Los Muñequitos de Matanzas. Poetry in motion of dance greats like the Paul Taylor Dance Company and Urban Bush Women and the legendary Latin Jazz rhythms of the Big 3 Palladium Orchestra will be featured. And, in a unique collaboration Zakir Hussain, Béla Fleck and Edgar Meyer, each a master of his own musical form, will join forces on the Rialto stage.
