ATLANTA - Dr. Helene D. Gayle, president and chief executive officer of CARE USA, has received the 2009 Ethics Advocate Award from the Center for Ethics and Corporate Responsibility, a unit of Georgia State’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business. The award was presented to Dr. Gayle at a ceremony at the Carter Center on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
The Ethics Advocate Award honors an individual who has been an effective agent of change for ethical purposes in a particular field or in the business community at large. The selection committee chose Dr. Gayle in recognition of her unflagging advocacy on behalf of women, minorities and the marginalized.
“Helene Gayle’s leadership in addressing global poverty, injustice and inequality has motivated others to respond to those needs,” said Steve Olson, director of the Center for Ethics and Corporate Responsibility. “Her inspiration of others, especially global corporations, has resulted in effective partnerships that work toward finding a solution for these pervasive issues.”
Upon receiving the award, Dr. Gayle discussed society’s role in fighting poverty. “We all have a stake in joining the global fight against poverty,” adding that, “we are diminished as a people when we see suffering and do nothing about it.”
Dr. Gayle is the seventh individual to receive the Ethics Advocate Award. Past awardees include: E. Neville Isdell, former chairman and CEO, The Coca-Cola Company, for advancing corporate social responsibility, 2008; Charles Brewer, founder of MindSpring Enterprises and Green Street Properties, for advocacy of values-based management, 2007; The Honorable Shirley Franklin, Mayor, City of Atlanta, for restoring trust in city government through an “ethics first” approach, 2006.
