An International Twist

Scott Hazy after the Kaiser Permanente 5K.

Little did Scott Hazy (B.B.A. ’83) know that taking a course outside of his accounting major would end up changing his career path.

At GSU, he worked full-time at a law firm and studied accounting, but his favorite class was international business.

“That class propelled me to maintain an interest in international affairs.”

After graduation, Hazy worked for Touche Ross & Co. (now Deloitte and Touche, LLP). His career progressed from there, working for BDO Seidman, the world’s sixth largest accounting and consulting firm, where in 1995 he became a partner.

“I’ve always worked with international business, and I just loved working with different cultures and the technical challenges that come with that” he says.

In 2001, Hazy moved to Bennett Thrasher, one of Atlanta’s largest full service certified public accounting firms. Hazy is now a partner and shareholder, specializing in international audit and finance reporting.

Most recently, he was elected president of DFK International, a top 10 international association of independent accounting firms and business advisers. He’s also a member of member of the Georgia Society of CPAs (GSCPA), the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the German American Chamber of Commerce.

His advice to students of all ages? To explore the world.

“The world is becoming a very small place and a tight community,” he says. “Get outside of your comfort zone and get out there and learn from it!”
