International travel is essential to the fulfillment of the global education mission of GSU. The purpose of this guidance is to enhance the safety and security of Georgia State University personnel while traveling abroad on official business.
All GSU faculty, staff and students are required to report official international travel prior to departing. This will be accomplished by submitting the New Web-based International Travel Form (ITF) to OII at the time of preparation of the Travel Authorization Request Form.
The ITF captures travel details and contact information to be used in the event of an emergency and to share information such as U.S. State Department travel alerts and warnings; airport closures or incidents; and other developments that could impact travel both prior to departure and while in travel status.
International travelers should have university emergency contact numbers in their possession prior to departure and register their travel with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country of destination. (Non-US citizens may contact their Embassy or Consulate in the U.S. or in the country of destination.) All travelers are encouraged to consider acquiring medical evacuation and repatriation insurance coverage while abroad.
OII maintains an International Travel Registry of the names and contact information for GSU personnel traveling abroad. The registry is updated weekly and given to the Campus Police, OII’s Crisis Coordinator (Study Abroad Programs Director), and Alternate Crisis Coordinator (Associate Provost for International Initiatives).
In case of an emergency or crisis situation, international travelers should seek immediate assistance from authorities such as the U.S. Embassy and the local police. At the earliest opportunity, travelers should call the Georgia State University Campus Police at 404-413-3333. The Police will contact the OII Crisis Coordinator who will initiate the Emergency Notification System and coordinate the university’s response.
