Process

Academic units, including centers and institutes, are required to undergo review every seven years.  The academic program review process takes three years for a unit to complete.

The first year is a planning year during which the academic unit constitutes a self study committee and identifies its chair, submits a list of potential external reviewers, and with assistance from the Office of Institutional Research, compiles the data required for the review.

During the second year the unit prepares its self study and hosts external reviewers. The Academic Program Review (APR) committee (a sub-committee of the University Senate's Committee on Academic Programs) drafts its report based upon review of the self study and external reviewers' report. The Committee on Academic Programs reviews and approves the APR report.

During the third year the academic unit prepares its action plan, which is reviewed and approved by the dean and the Provost. For a detailed timeline of this process, please go to the Academic Program Review Timeline located under the General Information tab.
