A Guide to Managing Stress

What is Stress?

Stress occurs when we come to believe that the demands of our life are exceeding our ability to cope with them.

When this happens, our nervous system activates a set of reactions, which are meant to rapidly mobilize and conserve energy to better cope with these demands.

Some argue that there is neither good nor bad stress, but rather the effects of stress are determined by how we view and process stress.

To handle stress effectively, it’s important to know the following for yourself:

  • Potential sources of stress.
  • How you know when you’re stressed (e.g., irritable, muscle tension)
  • What helps you cope with stress.
