Living - Learning Communities Brochure

Living - Learning Communities offer a dedicated and distinctive themed living option to our residents.  They maintain a genuine sense of community and they are supported by programs, conversations and faculty interaction centered on the member’s interest.  All the Living - Learning Communities are carefully planned and supported by University Housing staff along with the members of the community.  Since all the members share interest in their community’s theme, you can expect to build genuine relationships and life-long friends.

1. Residential Emerging Leaders (FLC – 50), Ellis East or West: Floor TBA

The Residential Emerging Leaders Community is a specially designed program for first-year students and is a first step toward becoming a student leader at Georgia State. Emerging Leaders is designed to enhance leadership skills and potential; foster interpersonal, social, ethical and moral development; and instill an attitude of social awareness and responsibility. Leadership experience is not a pre-requisite for this community. Students participating in this community are required to attend an overnight retreat in July (see FLC website for exact dates). The 50 spaces in this community are reserved for those students registered for the Residential Emerging Leaders FLC.

 

2. Exploring Life in the Big City: Atlanta-Based Learning (FLC – 25; Open – 25), Commons C: Floor 8

Explore the culture and community of GSU’s campus: Atlanta! Through activities such as walking tours, site visits, panel discussions and civic engagement, students will explore urban, community and social issues in Atlanta while making connections to their academic courses and their own life experiences. We will also incorporate sights and sounds that Atlanta has to offer to increase appreciation for arts and culture in our surrounding community. Half of the spaces in this community (25) are reserved for students registered for the following FLCs: Atlanta Based Learning I & II; Filming in the Metropolis I & II and the other half (25) open to any first-year or upper class students.

 

3. Honors (Open – 150), Commons D: Floors 6-8

Georgia State University's Honors Program offers high-achieving and highly motivated students the resources to excel academically and to prepare for successful professional careers. Honors students have access to individualized advisement, small classes and seminars, priority registration, and special housing in the University Commons. The Honors Program is open to incoming freshmen, transfer students, and current Georgia State students who meet the criteria for admission.

 

4. Student Support Services (Open – 60), Freshman Hall: Floor 2

Student Support Services is a program within the Office of Educational Opportunity and TRIO Programs. The goal of Student Support Services floor is to provide students with the academic assistance and information that will lead towards retention and graduation. Open to first-year students – participating students are approved through the Office of Educational Opportunity and TRIO Programs.

 

5. Living Green (Open – 50), Commons C: Floor 6

The Living Green! Community is designed for students who have an interest in minimizing their negative impact on the environment. Areas of focus include water conservation, energy conservation, the 3R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle), and education of the Georgia State University community. This community is open to any first-year or upper class students.

 

6. Outdoor Adventure (Open – 50), Commons  B: Floor 10

The Outdoor Adventure! Community is designed to provide opportunities for interested residents to connect with nature and outdoor activities. Students will participate in a variety of outdoor trips such as hiking, whitewater rafting or horseback riding. This community is open to any first-year or upper class students.

 

7. SAIL (Sophomores only – 75), Lofts: Floors 12-14

The SAIL Community combines services, programs, and curricular and co-curricular activities which encourages a solid transition for sophomore students to achieve junior status and their future educational and career aspirations. SAIL offers a foundation to explore the specific academic experiences and opportunities Georgia State University has to offer which addresses the needs of sophomores and provides appropriate services and programs that promotes success. All students participating in SAIL are required to take CPS 2500 (Career Development and Life Planning). The SAIL community is offered to rising sophomores for the upcoming academic year.

 

8. Pre-Professionals (FLC – 50), Ellis East or West: Floor  TBA

The Pre-Professionals floor is designed for those students interested in pursuing law, medicine, or other professional programs (nursing, education, etc). Students will have the opportunity to learn more about professional programs, form study groups, and interact with other students with similar goals. Professionals will be invited onto the floor to talk with students about their experiences. All 50 spaces in this community are reserved for students registered for the following FLCs related to professional programs: Teaching in Today’s Society; Law and Society; Exploring Teaching Careers in Mathematics and Science; Health Professional; Pre-Nursing; Families in Contemporary Societies (Social Work)

 

9. Global Business and Society (FLC – 50), Ellis East or West: Floor TBA

The Global Business and Society community provides an opportunity for students to learn more about the world of business and how business affects all areas of society. Through programming and group discussions, students will be exposed to various components of the business field. Additionally, residents would have opportunities to interact with business leaders in our community to learn from their personal experiences. All 50 spaces in this community are reserved for students registered for the following FLCs related to professional programs: Business, Risk and Society; Business and Technology; Commercial Geography and International Business; Global Business and Society; Introduction to Business and Finance I & II; Language and International Business

 

10. Service Learning (Open – 50), Commons B: Floor 1

The Service Learning Community provides an opportunity for students interested in service learning to work with like minded students to give back to the Georgia State and Atlanta community. Through regular service projects, students will not only help create a stronger community, but also grow as individuals and leaders. This community is open to any first-year or upper class students.

 

11. Intersections: Exploring Diversity at Georgia State (FLC – 25), Ellis East or West: Floor TBA – same floor as #12

Diversity challenges how we think and feel as we learn to work, live, study and relate to one another. Our differences and similarities, according to race, gender, ethnicity, language, culture and sexual identity, both distinguish and unite us. This community provides a great opportunity to live with and learn from people whose ideas and experiences may be radically different from yours or surprisingly similar. This community is open to 25 students registered in one of the following FLCs: African-American Culture and History; Gender, Identity and Youth Cultures; Global Ambassadors I & II; International Human Rights; Latin American and Latino Studies; Race, Religion and Conflict; Religion and Global Culture; Understanding Diversity

 

12. Public Policy (FLC – 25), Ellis East or West: Floor? – same floor as #11

The Public Policy Community is focused on introducing students to various aspects of public policy. In this community, students will have an opportunity to learn what skills are needed to address the social issues that are facing our communities. Students will also be able to learn how to become a valuable public servant. This community is open to 25 students registered in one of the following FLCs: Making a Difference: Public and Non-Profit Leadership; Urban Education.

 

13. Namaste: A Healthy Lifestyle Living Floor  (FLC – 25; Open – 25), Commons A: Floor 14

College can be fun but also stressful. It is impossible to avoid stress; therefore you will benefit from learning stress management techniques and how to have a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Students on this floor will also sign an agreement to abide by 24-hour quiet hours and a substance-free pledge. Half of the spaces in this community (25) are reserved for students registered for the following FLCs: Stress Management and Well Being; Promoting a Healthy Georgia State and the other half (25) are open to any first-year or upper class students.
