In addition to the other advantages and benefits of being in the Honors College, students are encouraged to work toward one or more of three formal recognitions. These are recorded on transcripts and on diplomas with seals. Honors recognitions require 3.3 grade point averages overall and in honors course work. No courses with grades of D or F may be applied toward the satisfaction of the requirements for honors recognitions. Incoming freshmen honors students are required to enroll in Honors 1000, a 1-hour seminar that introduces students to research-based academic work in the disciplines.
Granted to students who complete at least 12 credit hours of course work in lower-division honors classes at Georgia State University (not including Honors 1000). The 12 hours of lower-division course work must be in classes selected from at least three major areas of study with no more than two classes in any one area.
Granted to students who complete at least 12 semester hours of honors course work at the upper division, plus two honors colloquiums. A maximum of nine hours of honors dimensions, and a maximum of nine semester hours of graduate courses may be applied toward this recognition.
Granted to students who satisfy the requirements for Advanced Honors and also complete an undergraduate honors thesis project. For more information on the Research Honors distinction and on completing an Honors thesis, click here.
