Welcome to the new Honors College at Georgia State University. These are exciting times for all of us. One of the cornerstones of the university’s 2011-2016 Strategic Plan was to establish an Honors College that advocates for the educational experiences and resources needed by our high-ability students. As Founding Dean of the Honors College, I am truly excited about the opportunity of transforming a vibrant honors program into a premier Honors College and community where faculty can work with our most talented students to advance undergraduate scholarship, enhance research, foster service, and compete for prestigious awards and fellowships. Our honors community values social responsibility and civic engagement by nurturing the concept of public service and serving interests larger than one’s self.
I believe that an honors education should allow students to experience what William Blake referred to when he wrote, “In the universe, there are things that are known, and things that are unknown, and in between, there are doors.” Opening doors is the essence of an honors education. The college nurtures the development of intellectual judgment and inquiry skills through small seminars and mentoring of research projects from engaged faculty. It is a place that encourages and awards intellectual curiosity!
I hope that you spend some time opening the doors of our newly designed web page where you can discover the opportunities and experiences of an honors education at Georgia State University. You will learn about our innovative and expanding honors curricula, first-hand global experiences from our students, undergraduate research opportunities and ways of competing for prestigious national awards and fellowships. Most of all, I hope you discover the sense of excitement that we at the Honors College already feel for the future. The Honors College is already home for our most innovative teachers and intellectually curious students. There’s plenty of room and I hope you consider joining us. You will find a new Dean and Honors College staff whose top priority is meeting the goals of our strategic plan by becoming a national model for undergraduate education. The new Honors College is at the epicenter of these exciting times.
