(Dr. Berman at the keel-laying ceremony. "It was so cold!)
On November 17, 2012 Dean Berman attended the keel-laying ceremony for the USS ZUMWALT (DDG 1000) at Bath Iron Works (BIW) in Bath, Maine. Dean Berman's forthcoming book, "ZUMWALT: The Life and Times of Admiral Elmo 'Bud' Zumwalt, Jr." will be published by Harper Collins in December 2012. The laying of the keel, going back to the days of wooden ships, marked the laying of the first piece of timber to start the ship's construction. Obviously, this significant event has changed over the years with the evolution of new materials, technologies and construction techniques. Today, keel laying marks the completion and placement of a significant ship component. Approximately 30% of the ZUMWALT has now been completed--and 100% of it is under construction. This ceremony takes place at the shipyard where the ship is being built.
