Honors

About

The Honors Program offers students a variety of advantages that can help to create an extraordinary learning environment at Georgia State.

Tailored Classes:  Smaller, intensive classes (taught in seminars of fewer than 20 students by senior faculty) enable students to enjoy both a small liberal arts college atmosphere and the benefits of a large research university.  Working closely with accomplished faculty, students can also explore material not regularly covered in the existing curriculum.

Advanced Research and Honors Theses: Honors students have the opportunity to participate directly in the research projects of distinguished scholars and scientists.  Those students who choose to write an Honors Thesis benefit from the guidance of talented faculty members who will direct the student's efforts to initiate their own research project and to compile their results and conclusions in a thesis--a capstone experience that, for many students who complete it, is the highpoint of their Georgia State experience.

Priority Registration:  Active Honors students are able to register for classes before everyone else, and staff members are available for guidance on classes and scheduling.

Top Facilities and Housing:  The Georgia State University Lofts is currently the site of a block of housing reserved for Honors students.  Beginning Fall 2008, Honors housing will be located in the University Commons, the newest and most desirable housing on campus.  In addition, the Honors Program offices feature a computer lab, a student lounge, classrooms, and meeting rooms – all dedicated to Honors students.

Freedom to Choose:  Honors students can take as many or as few Honors courses as they like, and by fulfilling particular requirements they can earn any of three special Honors designations that appear on their transcripts and diplomas at graduation.

Graduate School Preparation: Honors students have the opportunity to enroll in graduate courses as advanced undergraduates and to hone their research skills through their contact with faculty advisors.  In recent years, Georgia State Honors students have been admitted to top graduate schools including Yale, Oxford, and Harvard Law and have received prestigious national fellowships such as the Fulbright.

In short, the Honors Program combines all of the benfits of a large research environment operating in a dynamic urban environment with the supportive atmosphere of a small selective college.  The Honors Program is designed to help you to make the most of your opportunites as an undergraduate student!
