Being active on campus while remaining a high achieving student can be a difficult task but senior Georgia State Honors College student Skyler Green makes it look easy.

 

Since transferring to Georgia State after the end of his freshmen year, Green has been involved with Tighter Grip, National Society for Collegiate Scholars, the Student Judicial Board and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated in addition to working as a student assistant at the College of Education and maintaining a high GPA.

 

“I advise everybody to get involved,” Green said. “You can focus more on your studies if you don’t do anything but you’re not maximizing your college experience if you don’t get involved.”

 

So how does Green maintain grades despite having a long list of obligations?

 

“Studying,” Green said with a laugh.  “Make sure you study on the week and the weekend. I think a lot of people lose out on good studying time on the weekend.”

 

Green is also not shy about using campus resources. He said he likes to take advantage of the library, the digital aquarium as well as honors perks such as the computer lab and honors advisement.

 

“Your student fees are paying for it so you mine as well use it all,” Green said.

 

Green, now a senior, transferred to Georgia State from Savannah State University in search of a new climate, diversity, a wider range of majors and a more academically challenging school. The honors college has helped shape the type of experience Green was looking for as he has been taking honors courses since his second semester at GSU.

 

Being a member of Alpha Phi Alpha has opened Green’s eyes to some things he would not have been exposed to if solely focused on academics. His chapter has serviced the Atlanta area as well as other communities around the U.S. Green serves as the financial secretary and the recording secretary.

 

“It’s a great networking experience,” Green said of being a involved with Greek life.  “It steps up my ambition to want to do more things.”

 

Green is a prime example of a student making the most of the college experience.
