What is Altiris?

Altiris is a remote desktop management application that gives IS&T the ability to remotely install software, manage updates, reset workstation passwords and more on laptops and desktops that are supported and maintained by IS&T.

Will the Altiris client impact how my computer operates?

No, it will not affect your computer’s performance, nor will it conflict with any installed applications.

Can the Altiris client be used to monitor activity on my computer?

No.  Although Altiris gives IS&T technicians and technologists the ability to remotely access your computer, it is configured to only allow remote access with your permission.  If you are not at your computer when a request is sent,  your computer will automatically refuse the connection.

How is a remote connection initiated?

A remote connection is initiated by a request for service via a Help Desk ticket.

  • When the technician is ready to control your machine, you will see the “Altiris Client Service Message” dialog box on your screen that gives you two options:  Control Now, or Abort
  • Click “Control Now” to relinquish control of your machine to the technician.  At this point, you will see the technician’s mouse on your screen – and you will not be able to use your own mouse.

You will know the technician is in control of your machine because the “a” icon in your system tray will turn into a “blinking eye,” and will blink throughout the controlled session.

After the technician completes your service, he will exit Altiris.  At this point, you will regain control of the mouse, and the “blinking eye” will return to the “a” icon in your system tray.

Can I install Altiris on my Mac or other computers running operating systems other than Windows?

No.  Only computers running 32-bit Windows operating systems are required to install Altiris at this time.  Future plans are to incorporate Macs and computers running other operating systems including computers running 64-bit Windows operating systems.

How do I determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system?
