Connecting to the Network from Home (VPN - Virtual Private Network)
A VPN is a small privacy tunnel that is created within a larger, existing network. Such a privacy tunnel provides an additional level of security (not possible within the larger network), while providing the same services and capabilities available within the larger network.
Any faculty, staff, or student requiring an additional layer of security while working on the network from an off-campus location should use the VPN. This specifically includes individuals who are working from off-campus, but who are accessing applications normally restricted to on-campus access. (Spectrum, MicroSoft SQL Net, MicroSoft File & Print Sharing, etc.)
At Georgia State University, you should install and work through a VPN if:
- you are accessing the wireless network.
- increased security is required (VPN encrypts data from point "A" to point "B")
- what you are doing requires an on-campus IP address
- you need access to protocols and/or applications that are blocked by the Campus Edge
