This project is a four story addition to the existing Classroom South Building and will consist mainly of general purpose classrooms and computer labs. It is being developed on the previous site location of a surface parking lot using infill design concept due to limited availability of vacant university land. Existing Classroom South utilities and amenities such as elevators and restrooms can be utilized to serve the addition and hence providing maximum efficiency of resources. The 23,500 GSF addition will provide three computer labs (total of 100 workstations) on 2nd floor and fifteen general purpose classrooms (total seat capacity of about 700) on 3rd, 4th and 5th floors. The 1st floor will be used for parking and mechanical space. All classrooms and computer labs will be equipped with state of art technology. The addition will be similar in character and aesthetically blend with the existing building and the transition from one building to the other will be seamless. It is schedule for completion by July 2011.

Piedmont Avenue is a major four lane one-way (northbound) street connecting State Capitol and downtown to midtown. It also serves Georgia State University campus and Grady Memorial Hospital with heavy pedestrian traffic. Currently, the pedestrian environment within the corridor is inadequate to accommodate the volume of pedestrians and is further strained by poorly marked and signalized crosswalks, sidewalks in disrepair, inadequate lighting, poor signage and obstacles for the disabled and elderly. The current conditions are unsightly, dangerous and not conducive to pedestrian activity. To increase the pedestrian safety the proposed project will reduce existing four lanes to three lanes between Decatur Street and John Wesley Dobbs Avenue. It will also consist of widening of existing sidewalks and other streetscape improvements such as trees, pedestrian lighting and new crosswalks. The project is scheduled to begin in November 2010 and completed by June 2011. |
