Piedmont Avenue is a major four lane one-way (northbound) street connecting State Capitol and downtown to midtown. It also serves Georgia State University campus and Grady Memorial Hospital with heavy pedestrian traffic.
Currently, the pedestrian environment within the corridor is inadequate to accommodate the volume of pedestrians and is further strained by poorly marked and signalized crosswalks, sidewalks in disrepair, inadequate lighting, poor signage and obstacles for the disabled and elderly. The current conditions are unsightly, dangerous and not conducive to pedestrian activity.
To increase the pedestrian safety the proposed project will reduce existing four lanes to three lanes between Decatur Street and John Wesley Dobbs Avenue. It will also consist of widening of existing sidewalks and other streetscape improvements such as trees, pedestrian lighting and new crosswalks.
The project is scheduled to begin in November 2010 and completed by June 2011.
