Millions of Americans are oppressed everyday, yet few realize the long term effects. However, Georgia State University is doing its part to give the Georgia State and Atlanta community a glimpse during its presentation of the "Tunnel of Oppression," a visual, theatrical, and interactive effort to raise consciousness of the various forms of oppression perpetuated in our collective society. The Tunnel experience provokes dialogue and will hopefully inspire action on Georgia State University's campus and in our local communities said Rinardo Rio Reddick, area coordinator for the University Lofts. The goal of the Tunnel is to bring acts of oppression and hate out in the open and explore the prejudices that motivate such acts. Participants will be guided through a tunnel in which they will view approximately six to eight rooms. Each of these rooms will explore a particular form of oppression and the way in which it occurs in our world. Some of the topics included in the Tunnel are racism, body image, GLBT, HIV, homelessness, and domestic violence. The tour of the Tunnel will be followed by a discussion facilitated by professional staff from the Georgia State Counseling Center. Tours run at 30-minute intervals with the last tour of the night beginning at 6:30 p.m. on March 17th and 4:30 p.m. on March 18th. The entire experience will last approximately 45 minutes. First 50 each day will get a free "Tunnel of Oppression" T-shirts or a free ticket for the Knowing is Peace HIV/AIDS Concert!
