The World Saxophone Quartet is one of the finest and most unusual small combos in jazz today. The Quartet began performing as a unit in 1976, inspired by Ed Jordan from New Orleans. Jordan had been impressed by each of the artists individually and brought them together for one show, which in turn led to many more and, finally, the formation of an official group consisting of four saxophones. David Murray, probably one of the most recorded jazz musicians in modern history, performs tenor; Oliver Lake appears on both alto and soprano saxophones; while Hamiet Bluiett, one of the most accomplished saxophonists to emerge in the 1970s, performs baritone. They are joined by acclaimed special guest Greg Osby.
