By nearly any standard, wooden crates, tithing boxes, and donkey jaws are not typical musical instruments. But due to the vagaries of history (a ban on drums placed upon African slaves by Spanish colonizers), these are the chosen instruments for Perú Negro as they return to the Rialto stage. Formed over 35 years ago to preserve Peru's African heritage, the troupe has performed all over the world and been appointed "Cultural Ambassadors of Peruvian Culture" by their nations government. Perú Negro's high energy show is made up of festive and celebratory dances interwoven with vibrant live music that recreates the folk history of their ancestors. Their album Jolgorio received both a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional World Music Album as well as a Latin Grammy Award nomination.
