Withdrawal from Classes
After registration and before the midpoint of the term, students may withdraw from a classes using GoSOLAR. Withdrawals appear on a student’s permanent record and may be initiated by the student either before or after the midpoint, by the instructor after the semester midpoint based on attendance, or after the midpoint in the case of a nonacademic emergency. Keep reading for details on these three types of withdrawals.
You withdraw from a class when you decide to stop attending after the last day of Late Registration. You must complete the procedure to withdraw from a class using GoSOLAR. Do not withdraw from the same class twice. The following policies also apply:
- If you withdraw from a class after the end of Late Registration but before the semester or mini-mester midpoint, the course will appear on your transcript and you will receive a grade of either W or WF at your professor's discretion. If you withdraw after the midpoint of the semester or mini-mester but before the final two weeks of scheduled classes, the course will appear on your transcript and you will receive a grade of WF. The only exception to this policy is a Hardship Withdrawal, described below. You may not withdraw from a course during the final two weeks of scheduled classes of the semester or mini-mester. Review the Academic Calendar for the specific dates.
- Not attending a class for which you are registered does not constitute a formal withdrawal or entitle you to a refund for that class.
- Students who register for classes and do not pay for those classes are expected to drop classes during official registration periods. For registration dates, please see above. Students who do not drop will be held accountable for all fees. A stop payment of a check does not constitute a formal withdrawal.
You must follow all of the procedures listed in this section to be eligible for a withdrawal grade of W (withdraw passing). Failure to do so will result in your receiving a grade of WF (withdraw failing) instead of a grade of W. It is to your advantage to take the necessary actions as soon as you have made your decision to withdraw from a class. Your professor will use the date your withdrawal is effective (the date you complete the withdrawal transaction) as one factor in determining your grade of W or WF. A withdrawal transaction completed prior to the midpoint of the semester does not guarantee you will receive a grade of W.
If an emergency situation prevents you from taking personal action to withdraw from classes prior to the midpoint of the semester or mini-mester session, please email the Office of Registrar at onestopshop@gsu.edu for assistance. All e-mail requests must be submitted via your Georgia State e-mail account. If you do not have access to e-mail, call (404) 413-2600. If you are enrolled in the College of Law, please contact the College of Law Student Services Office at (404) 413-9200 for assistance in withdrawing from classes.
Hardship Withdrawal
Students may be granted hardship withdrawals after the midpoint of the semester when nonacademic emergency situations that prevent them from completing their course work occur. Hardship withdrawals are subject to the following restrictions:
- Students are not eligible for hardship withdrawals in any course in which they have completed the course requirements (e.g., taking the final exam or submitting the final project).
- Students must initiate an application for a hardship withdrawal no later than one academic year after the semester in which the courses were taken.
Hardship status normally applies to all the courses a student took in a semester but in some cases may be granted for some of a student’s courses. Students requesting a hardship withdrawal in some but not all of their courses must provide documentation to justify such a partial withdrawal. If a student is granted a hardship withdrawal (full or partial), the instructors of the courses from which the student is withdrawing must award a grade of W or WF, depending on whether the student was doing passing work as of the effective date of the hardship.
Hardship withdrawals are handled through the Dean of Students. Visit their web site for more details about hardship withdrawals.
Involuntary Withdrawal
Instructors will assess whether a student is still attending the course after the midpoint. Students who have not withdrawn from the course but who are no longer attending the class will be given a grade of WF. Since a grade of WF has the same effect on a student's GPA as a grade of F, it is vitally important that students follow the procedures for withdrawal noted above.
