Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Programs

The Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Programs was established in the fall, 1999 by the Provost. At that time, the office was called the Office of the Undergraduate Studies. In February 2005, the department was renamed the Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Programs.

The mission of the office is the management of enrollment. New student enrollment and retention at the University and are key responsibilities of the Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Programs, which ensures that students’ initial contact and their continuing experience at Georgia State are both friendly and efficient.

The office has three direct reports:

1. The Assistant Vice President for Undergraduate Recruitment and Retention

Admissions Recruitment
Advisement and Second Year Programs
Freshmen Learning Communities
Scholars (recruitment, selection, and retention)
Atlanta-Based Learning
Latino-Hispanic Recruitment and Retention
Perspectives Courses (scheduling and approval)

2. The Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Services and University Registrar

Student Financial Aid
Admissions Application Processing
Technical Support (Banner Office)

3. The Director of International Student and Scholar Services

The Associate Provost for Academic Programs is also responsible for graduate admissions application processing, and with both the Counseling Center and New Student Orientation having a dotted line reporting relationship.  All of these departments, plus others, comprise the Enrollment Management Group.

In addition to the enrollment management arm of the Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Programs, the office coordinates the Perspectives courses, which fulfill institutional options under Area B of the undergraduate core curriculum.

The Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Programs focuses on incoming students by offering two programs.  The office coordinates the GSU 1010 — New Student Orientation course. The GSU 1010 course is designed to introduce students to the academic life of the University and to help them make a smooth transition from high school to college. The Freshmen Learning Communities (FLCs), also under the umbrella of the Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Programs, provide freshmen with a cluster of core courses tailored to a particular topic, which appeals to various interests as well as satisfying the general educational requirements for most majors.  By coordinating and offering FLCs, the office is creating small, friendly communities within Georgia State.

The Presidential Assistantship program is also under the direction of the Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Programs. The PA program awards scholarships and assisantships to new freshmen and transfer students who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership in high school and college.

In February, 2001, Dr. William J. Fritz, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies, was named to lead the Banner project team.
