Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997

Effective January 1, 1998, the Hope Scholarship Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit allows taxpayers to reduce their federal income tax based upon qualified tuition and fees paid, assuming the taxpayer meets all TRA97 requirements.

Specific Instructions for Form 1098-T
As an eligible educational institution, Georgia State University is required to file a Form 1098-T for each student enrolled in degree-seeking programs for any semester during 2007.  Following is a brief explanation of the fields on the form.

Box 1. Georgia State does not report in Box 1 and it is left blank.
Box 2. Amount billed during the calendar year for qualified tuition and related expenses* less related reductions in charges such as tuition waivers.
Box 3. Georgia State has not changed its reporting method therefore this field is left blank.
Box 4. Indicates any adjustment made for a prior year for qualified tuition and related expenses that were reported on a prior year Form 1098-T.
Box 5. Scholarships or grants processed during the calendar year.
Box 6. Indicates any adjustment made to scholarships or grants that were reported on a prior year Form 1098-T.
Box 7. If this box is checked, the amounts in box 1 and/or box 2 include amounts for an academic period beginning January - March 2008.
Box 8. If this box is checked, the student enrolled at least half-time in 2007.
Box 9. If this box is checked, the student was a graduate level student in 2007.
Box 10. Georgia State does not report in Box 10 and it is left blank.

*Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses
Qualified tuition and related expenses are tuition and mandatory student fees (except health and transportation fees) a student must pay to be enrolled at or attend Georgia State University. Charges and fees for non-degree-seeking courses, housing, student insurance, health services, transportation, parking, and other personal, living, or family expenses are not qualified tuition and related expenses.

A copy of your 1098-T has been mailed to you or it can be found online at www.1098t.com.
1. Go to: www.1098t.com
2. Click on: Access My Record
3. Enter: Social Security Number or click the option to enter your school identification number (with Panther Number, 9-digit, no dashes).
4. Enter: Last Name
5. Enter: PIN if applicable, otherwise, click Login.  You may need to set up your PIN following the instructions
6. Select desired tax year
7. Click Select
8. Click View My 1098-T Tax Form on the left menu
