Frequently Asked Questions About Graduation

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions of the Georgia State University Graduation Office.  Please review before you make a call. The answer you seek may be here.

How much is the graduation application fee?

$50.00 for graduate and undergraduate students

Students must pay a seperate fee for each degree/major earned.

What form of payment do you accept for my application for graduation?

Cash, check, or money order. We do not accept credit or debit cards. Remember, you turn in and pay for your application for graduation at Student Accounts cashier's window located on the first floor of Sparks Hall.

What is the graduation fee used for?

The graduation fee is a processing fee, and also pays for the printing of the diploma, and the ceremonial program.

Do you have to pay the application fee when you turn in the application?

Yes.

I have applied for graduation but haven’t received any information…Why?

It is very important to visit your appropriate Office of Academic Assistance.  Information about commencement is always on the Graduation Office’s website.

Am I on the graduation list for this semester?

The list of candidates for the current semester is posted in the front hallway of Sparks Hall, 2nd floor. The list is also on online at Applying for Graduation..

So, I don’t buy the regalia from the Graduation Office?

No. You buy it from the GSU Bookstore.

Can I get a replacement copy of my diploma?

Yes. The fee is $20.00. The order form is on the Registrar’s Office web page.  (look under “student records”) Deliver the order form to the Commencement Office at 249 Sparks Hall.

How do I get a certified copy of my diploma?

You should make a reduced-size copy of your diploma and bring it to the graduation office.  We will also certify the original diploma but most third parties will accept a copy. There is no fee.

Where do I get a copy of the Application for Graduation or any other form the Graduation Office has?

All forms and applications are online, or it can be picked up from the Gradaution Office located in Sparks Hall, room 231.

If I want to change my graduation date do I have to pay again?

No. Once your application fee is paid you do not pay another fee to the Graduation Office.

Can my nickname be printed on my diploma?

No, the name printed on the diploma must be your legal name on record here at the university.  The only time we will change a name is due to a legal name change - a marriage for example. Go to the One Stop Shop with documents in hand to change your name.

Whatever name you have in PAWS is the name that will appear on your diploma.  It does not matter what name you list on your application for graduation.

How many guests may each student invite to the commencement ceremony at the Georgia Dome?

Students may invite all the guests they wish.

Will my major be reflected on my diploma?

No, your diploma only reflects the degree you have earned.  Your major is reflected on your transcript.

Is the Graduation Office in Sparks Hall the place that I need to go find out if the class I'm taking now is applicable for graduation?

No, you would have to contact your Office of Academic Assistance, or, if you are a graduate student, your faculty adviser.

Does my transfer courses count in my GPA for "honors"?

No, only GSU coursework counts for "honors".
