At long last, we appear to be digging ourselves out of the greatest recession since the Great Depression. Over the past three years, we have lived through a stock market collapse, corporate bankruptcies, government bailouts, and high unemployment, which remains today. While no one party or cause is wholly responsible, it’s probably correct to say these events all came about because insufficient attention was paid to risk and its consequences.

Students in this FLC will:

• think about and analyze risk

• examine how individuals and groups respond to risk

• explore risk across many different business settings and from current events

• gain experience using Excel as a tool for modeling and predicting outcomes

By definition, culture is a representation of the values, mores and norms of a given society. The pervasiveness of popular culture in the United States is undeniable. Its impact on society and its numerous sub-groups, however, diverge widely. In a country as diverse as the U.S., it has become more difficult to identify or separate the cultures that influence our society. This FLC will explore how culture is represented and experienced in different racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, gender and religious groups. Issues of privilege, stereotypes and powers will be discussed.

Students in this FLC will:

• examine cultural phenomena under different viewpoints

• explore the mutual interactions of culture and society

• emerge with a more fully realized perspective on popular culture

The PEP program provides opportunities for students to:

• attend academic success workshops

• meet with a mentor to assist in their college transition

• have academic advising integrated throughout their entire FLC

• participate in connected classes during spring semester

Have you ever considered how your gender, race, and social background influence how others interact with you and how you interact with others? The course on Gender, Race, and Class will use a framework of intersectionality to explore how multiple identities influence social experiences. The concept of intersectionality recognizes that multiple identities interact with, and inform one another to establish subjectivity (or people’s identities) in any given situation. This FLC is particularly pertinent to students who plan a career in the social sciences.

Students in this FLC will:

• develop a greater understanding of what gender and racial identity are and how they impact individuals in society

• engage in a self-examination related to their role in addressing some pressing social issues;

• become more socially conscious of the influence of gender, race and social identity on a variety of cultural, social, economic and political issues

The challenge for business, especially in the global marketplace, is to capitalize on core competencies while reconciling competing stakeholder claims. This FLC is for students majoring in business: accounting, actuarial science, economics, computer information systems, finance, hospitality, managerial sciences, marketing, real estate, or risk management and insurance.

Students in this FLC will:

• visit international corporations located in Atlanta

• examine the global business environment

• explore the impact of society, government, politics and the law on global businesses

• consider business issues such as ethical relativism, global corporate citizenship, and social/economic co-existence and sustainability

With the easy access to technology and information, we find ourselves instantly connected to the rest of the world. Physical distance no longer impedes the formation of social spheres, as people freely communicate and interact around the world. With all this information and all these cultures at the end of your fingertips, how do you see yourself fitting in? How does living in an interconnected world shape a new consciousness of being a world citizen? Where do different cultures, ethnicities, and religions fit in this “global village”? This FLC will answer these questions as well as examine the cultural and individual impacts of living in a global community.

Students in this FLC will:

• be encouraged to think globally, act locally

• explore issues related to diversity

• discuss current issues related to globalization

This FLC is for students interested in studying for a health career — especially pre-nutrition and pre-respiratory therapy — but will also be of interest to students who want a career in health but may not be sure which career is best suited for them. This course is not designed for pre-nursing majors because it contains only one laboratory science in the first semester; however, nursing students who plan to take their prerequisite courses in two years instead of one will enjoy this FLC. Students interested in careers in public health or physical therapy will also benefit from this FLC.

Students in this FLC will:

• explore different aspects and issues related to health fields

• examine the social, cultural, economic, political and personal factors that affect health and health care

• enhance their personal growth and development

The social, financial and political world we now live in requires that all American citizens see themselves as part of a broader, global world community in which religion, as an aspect of human culture, plays an increasingly important role. No other FLC incorporates religion, one of the primary components of any society, as part of its curriculum. Consequently, this FLC offers a unique learning experience for students who are already drawn to a global, multicultural environment.

Students in this FLC will:

• examine how they fit into the global community

• discuss how multiple religions must co-exist and cooperate in this global environment

• receive the background knowledge necessary to prepare them to become active, engaged citizens in a culturally diverse world

Especially in election years, social issues seem to be discussed at every level of society. While the discussion usually centers on what needs to be done about the issue, very little time is given trying to understand the causes or even the various perspectives (racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, gender, geographical, or religious ) of people affected by the issue. This FLC will explore in greater depth a few social issues and how these shape the United States and its citizens.

Students in this FLC will:

• examine societal issues under different viewpoints

• discuss privilege, stereotype, and power

• emerge with a more fully realized perspective on social issues
