Director of University Interdisciplinary Studies Programs (Academic Professional)

Consistent with the goal of the Strategic Plan to strengthen and advance interdisciplinary studies at Georgia State, the University offers interdisciplinary studies programs that are co-sponsored by departments in different colleges of the University. In order to capitalize on opportunities that cross-collegiate degrees create, the University is seeking to hire a Director of University Interdisciplinary Studies Programs. The Director of University Interdisciplinary Studies Programs will be responsible for the administration of cross-collegiate interdisciplinary degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This position will provide the administrative infrastructure necessary to ensure that cross-collegiate degree programs are offered in a manner that supports learning and student progression toward a degree. 

The Director will report to the Vice Provost.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain relationships with colleges, departments and other academic programs to ensure course approval, administration, scheduling, program development, assessment and outreach necessary  for interdisciplinary degree programming is coordinated in a manner that is consistent with academic standards and supports student progression.
  • Work closely with the University Interdisciplinary Studies Committee to set and implement goals and policies related to University Interdisciplinary Studies Programs.
  • Develop and improve processes and partnerships that facilitate interdisciplinary connections across curricular and co-curricular areas.
  • Assist faculty and departments that are exploring the establishment interdisciplinary studies degrees to understand program requirements and details about interdisciplinary studies degree approval process.
  • Coordinate University interdisciplinary studies program admissions process and work with academic advisors on campus to make sure admissions standards as well as degree program requirements are well understood.
  • Respond to student inquiries about University Interdisciplinary Studies Programs.
  • Assist in planning, monitoring, assessing and reporting the work of this area. Review and evaluate work both routinely and through year end reports for interdisciplinary studies programs.
  • Assure that practices in this area are consistent with the latest research and standards in curriculum and teaching by creating opportunities for interdisciplinary studies faculty to discuss internal and external research and instructional foci.
  • Establish ways to recognize, honor and reward exemplary faculty and student work in University interdisciplinary studies programs.
  • Supervise graduate assistants and any other part-time workers.
  • Provide up-to-date content for website and develop other promotion and marketing materials for University Interdisciplinary Studies Programs.
  • Provide training to academic advisors regarding University interdisciplinary programs to ensure accurate and efficient advisement for all students in such programs.

The successful applicant should possess an advanced academic degree (Ph.D. preferred) as well as excellent organizational skills and a proven track record of being able to communicate effectively with faculty, staff and students. The Director must be familiar with academic program planning, curricular design, faculty governance, and other aspects academic affairs including advisement, enrollment and retention issues.
