Who are emeriti?
Emeriti are retired faculty and administrative officers who have attained an honorary title corresponding to that held immediately before retirement. For example, a professor of Psychology may become a Professor Emeritus of Psychology after retirement. The Latin word Emeriti is the plural of the words Emeritus (masculine) and Emerita (feminine). The Board of Regents and many other organizations do not make a distinction between males and females and may use the term of Emeritus to refer to each individual who has attained this status.
From the Board of Regents: Emeritus Title. Policy Manual: Section 800: Personnel
803.14 Emeritus Title:
A president may, at his or her discretion, confer the title of emeritus/a on any retired faculty member or administrative officer who, at the time of retirement, had ten or more years of honourable and distinguished service to the University System, provided, however, that the title of President Emeritus/a may be conferred only by the Board of Regents on the recommendation of the Chancellor. (BR Minutes, January 2009)
How does a person become an emeritus?
A retiring or retired faculty member typically informs the department chair that he or she wishes to achieve emeritus status. The department faculty then votes on the request, and the chair forwards the recommendation to the Dean of the College. The Dean then adds his or her own recommendation and forwards the request to the Provost, who sends it to the President's office.
If you are a retired faculty member who has not applied for emeritus status, contact your department chair or the Dean of your college if you wish to become an emeritus.
